Dangerous and Moving is the second English-language studio album by the Russian singing duo tATu from 2005. The Russian-language counterpart was released in the same year and is called Люди Инвалиды ( Ljudi Inwalidy ).

Prehistory and publication

In 2001 tATu achieved great fame in Russia and Eastern Europe with their debut album 200 Po Wstretschnoi, in 2002 and 2003 their success expanded to Western Europe, Japan with the first English-language album 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane and the accompanying single All the Things She Said and North America. In June 2003, tATu announced in a television interview on VIVA that they wanted to start recording a new album. In January 2004, work began in Moscow on a second Russian-language album under the working title Podnebesnaya . In March 2004, however, tATu separated from their manager and producer Iwan Nikolajewitsch Schapovalov by not renewing the artist contract with him. The reasons for this were personal differences and the accusation that Schapovalov would not pay enough attention to the success of the duo, and wanted mainly to market himself and his other projects. For example, in the TV reality series "tATu в Поднебесной " ( tATu w Podnebesnoi - "tATu under the sky"), which accompanied tATu and the team during the work on the album, Shapovalov advertised other projects on a large scale, and himself also repeatedly staged in a targeted manner. In addition, both singers did not like the songs selected by Schapowalow, which is why the selection of songs was changed in essential parts.

Without exception, the remaining songs have been significantly edited in terms of their sound or melody.

Trevor Horn and Sergio Galoyan , who had both already worked on the previous albums, acted as producers again . However, it took half a year before album recordings could start again in August 2004. Not only did the production team have to be reorganized, but Julija Volkova's pregnancy also delayed the resumption of work. The recordings dragged on until May 2005 and took place in eight different studios in Moscow , London and Los Angeles .

Due to the separation from manager Schapowalow and the temporary suspension of work on the album, the release of the album was postponed by about a year, which led to tATu being forgotten in many countries and being referred to as a one-hit wonder .

Publication and Success

The album was first released on October 5, 2005 in Japan , where it entered the album charts at number ten. The album was marketed there much worse than its predecessor 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane , which went straight to number one in the album charts in 2003. The sales figures also lagged far behind those of the previous album : 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane had sold over 500,000 times in Japan in the week of publication, Dangerous and Moving only 23,000 times. A total of 100,000 Dangerous and Moving albums were sold in Japan , which was enough for a gold record.

A similar picture emerged in Taiwan . Dangerous and Moving reached number four on the album charts there, but fell out of the top 20 after just three weeks. Although the sales figures here also lagged behind those of the previous album , Dangerous and Moving was sold over 15,000 times in Taiwan, for which tATu was awarded a gold record in December 2005. On December 2, the duo gave a concert at Chung Sheng Stadium in Kaohsiung to 20,000 people , making it one of the largest concerts in tATu's history.

The album was released in the UK on October 10, North America on October 11, and Europe and Latin America on October 14 . There, too, with the exception of Latin America, the successes of 2003 could not be repeated. In Germany the album reached number twelve on the album charts and lasted six weeks. In the United States , the album had a brief interlude at number 131 on the Billboard charts, from which it fell out after just a week. A total of 93,000 Dangerous and Moving albums were sold in the United States . In most European countries the album reached at least the top 20 or top 30 of the album charts, which is still a peculiarity for Eastern European artists, but in comparison with the previous album was only moderate.

The album was more successful in Latin America. In Mexico it reached number five on the album charts, stayed there until 2006 and was awarded a gold record for sales of over 50,000 copies. In total, over a million Dangerous and Moving albums were sold in Latin America, which is also due to the large-scale promotional tour from 2005 to 2006.

criticism

Roger Holland of PopMatters.com favors Dangerous and Moving in his review of the previous album 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane , and calls All About Us the best song on the album. Holland sees tATu as a “perfect pop package”, but criticizes the small number of Russian songs on the album, which according to his criticism are the most outstanding songs by tATu, so that in his opinion the album lacks “Russian beauty and soul”. In its final rating, the album received eight out of ten points on PopMatters.com. Benjamin Fuchs from laut.de, on the other hand, describes the album as "hardly changed" compared to the previous album and sees Gomenasai as the "only audible ballad" - the rest is "a series of happy trivialities". Fuchs awards one of five possible points in its final rating on laut.de, but the album receives five out of five points in the reader rating.

James Blake writes in his album review for the BBC that tATu seems to have more depth than perhaps initially assumed, and describes Dangerous and Moving as being much more rounded than 200 km / h in Wrong Lane . If you leave out Gomenasai, called the "low point of the album", the album is an interesting guide for future music, which the title Craving (I Only Want What I Can't Have) best embodies. In addition, Blake writes that Dangerous and Moving is proof that tATu are more musical than just clever self-promoters in the media.

The Czech music critic Jana Henychová from musicserver.cz calls the album “a nice compromise between quality pop and dance music.” Henychová also refers to a “special linguistic originality” of tATus Russian songs, and would welcome more Russian-language songs on the album . Overall, she describes the album as “more than successful” and “full of strong songs and hits.” Henychová only sees the title song Dangerous and Moving , which was later to be released as a single in its Russian-language version in Russia, in her criticism slightly weakening exception.

The Rolling Stone called Dangerous and Moving in its November 2005 edition as "more aggressive than the first album," and was "Above all, the Russian-language tracks produce a solid tension". In addition, Rolling Stone wrote at the time that there was no doubt that the album had enough qualities to storm the charts.

Singles

When singles were released from the album:

The former, All About Us , developed into a successful comeback for the group, reaching the top 10 in almost all European charts. The second single, Friend or Foe , celebrated some successes in Russia, Poland and Hungary , but went largely unnoticed beyond that. Gomenasai , the most recently released single, also placed in the German and Austrian charts, here at the bottom of the ranking.

Dangerous and Moving Tour

In 2005 and 2006 the Dangerous and Moving Tour took place to promote the album. In addition to the songs from the new album, the older hits were also performed. The Dangerous and Moving Tour differed from previous appearances by the band in that it rarely used playback - live singing was almost always heard. For the first time in the band's history, special attention was paid to Latin America, where six concerts took place, four of them in Mexico and one each in Argentina and Brazil. In total, the duo visited four continents and gave 38 concerts.
