Yulia Wolkowa grew up as an only child with her parents Oleg Viktorovich Wolkow, a successful businessman, and Larissa Viktorovna Wolkowa in a prefabricated housing estate in the Perowo district of the eastern Moscow administrative district . At the age of seven she began piano training at a music school, from the age of eleven she attended a school with a focus on acting and dance.

At the age of nine, Volkova became a member of the Russian youth music group "Neposedy" (Непоседы), in which her cousin Sergei Lazarev sang. A year later, Katina, her future tATu partner, was accepted there. Wolkowa was on the road with “Neposedy” for a long time and also had a gig in Spain . During this time she also took on a few smaller film roles. When she had to leave the group at the age of 14 after exceeding the age limit, she got the opportunity to take part in the tATu casting and was finally selected. The duo quickly achieved great fame in Russia and the former Eastern Bloc countries, and in 2002 and 2003 they became famous around the world for their English-language publications.

Volkova was given the image of the "wild brunettes" by the management. As the androgynous she took over the "male part". Since she, unlike Katina, spoke hardly a word of English and usually no interpreters were available for doctorate appointments in Europe and the USA , she was often only left with the role of the mute listener - or provocateur.

After violent disagreements, tATu's career was interrupted for some time. During this time Volkova became pregnant by her boyfriend Pavel "Pasha" Sidorov. She gave birth to a daughter on September 23, 2004. In spring 2005, she separated from Sidorow. In October 2004, due to overuse of her voice, she had to have a cyst removed from her vocal cords, which was the reason why she could no longer sing the high head tones that were characteristic of her singing and her voice sounded unusually hoarse. All attempts to bypass surgery since May 2003 had been unsuccessful. However, the intervention meant that she can no longer sing high notes to this day. New singing techniques, which are specially designed to protect the vocal cords, enable her to continue her musical career. This surgical measure, as well as the personal conflicts and the simultaneous pregnancy, significantly impeded the intended continuation of the duo's earlier worldwide successes.

Since June 2005 tATu have been performing together again more often, in October the second album Ljudi Inwalidy / Dangerous and Moving was released , with which Wolkowa and Katina made a national and international comeback. The resulting first single, All About Us , was able to place itself back in the top ten of the charts in both Germany and Great Britain.

The first single from the third album Happy Smiles was titled White Robe and was previously released in Russian. This was followed by the Russian song 220 . On December 27, 2007, Volkova gave birth to their second child, a son. The father is Parviz Yasinov, from whom they separated in 2010.

In March 2011, tATu announced their final separation after they had been pursuing solo projects since 2009 and no further publications than tATu were planned.

Since 2011: solo career

As a solo artist, Wolkowa has been under contract with the Russian record label Gala Records since August 16, 2011. On November 11, 2011 she released her first solo single Сдвину мир ( Sdwinu Mir ), on December 2, the English version All Because of You followed . Wolkowa did not manage to build on the success of tATu for the time being, the song received little attention in Russia. The accompanying music video was eighth on the MTV Russia charts.

On March 29, 2012 it was announced that Volkova had applied with the song Back to Her Future , a duet with the singer Dima Bilan , for the national Russian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku. Wolkowa and Bilan, who entered the competition as favorites, achieved second place in the final of the preliminary decision, which was broadcast throughout Russia, the result of which was composed by an expert jury and a televoting. With 29.25 points the duet Volkova and Bilan achieved a good value, but had to admit defeat clearly Buranowskije Babuschki , who reached 38.51 points. On June 8, the Russian version of the song under the title Любовь-сука ( Lyubow-suka ) celebrated its radio premiere on the Russian-wide radio station Russkoje Radio . As Volkova's first publication after tATu, the title reached the top 100 of the Russian radio airplay charts.

Julia Volkova (2014)

The song Miss Volkova by the Swedish band Bondage Fairies is about Wolkowa and in a line of text also refers to her biggest hit as a tATu singer ( And all the things she said , it suddenly made sense ).

In 2014 she had a photo series in the June issue of the Russian Playboy .

In September 2014, Volkova stated on a Ukrainian TV show that he could not accept a gay son and criticized homosexuality among men: “I think that a man has to remain a man. [...] God created man for procreation, that's nature. I couldn't accept a gay son. ”By contrast, she described homosexuality in women as aesthetic and acceptable. In various media reports, these statements were rated as homophobic and anti-gay, in the German-speaking area, for example, by Die Welt and Focus . For its part, Russian state television picked up on Volkova's confession that she was not a patriot and felt closer to the United States than to her hometown Moscow or Russia. The following day, the singer's management denied this delicate presentation as "taken out of context" against the backdrop of the crisis in Ukraine , but left the anti-gay views uncommented.

In April 2016, Volkova announced that he had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2012 . During an operation to remove the tumor, her vocal cords were damaged, making it almost impossible for her to speak. Two operations carried out in Germany to restore her voice subsequently turned out negative. Only a third operation in Seoul was able to partially restore the singer's voice. Wolkowa had repeatedly been under medical treatment for voice problems since 2003, but kept her cancer secret for four years.
