Not Gonna Get Us (dt. [They] are we not get ) is a song by the Russian band tATu in 2003. It was on her first English album 200 km / h in the wrong lane contained and was out of this as the second single decoupled in May 2003.

production

Not Gonna Get Us is the English version of the song Nas ne dogonjat , which was released in 2001 and was very successful in Russia and Eastern Europe. Since the band was thought to have the potential to be successful in western music markets such as Europe and North America, the recording of an English-language album with the title 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane began in January 2002 . The song was translated into English and the sound was partially revised to better tailor it to the western music market. The lyrics of the Russian original were written by Jelena Kiper , Sergio Galoyan and Valeri Poljenko, and were translated into the English version by Trevor Horn . Sergio Galoyan is also responsible for the composition.

Publication and Success

In Russia , the European Union and the United States , the single was released on 5 May 2003, in Japan on June 11.

With Not Gonna Get Us , the duo could not build on the success of the first single All the Things She Said , but reached the top 10 of the charts in countries such as Italy , Great Britain and Mexico . In their native Russia, Not Gonna Get Us was tATu's last number one hit, although they topped the album charts several times in the following years. In Germany , the song reached number 15 on the singles charts and lasted for nine weeks. In Japan the song did worse than expected and only made it to number two on the singles charts, where it stayed for a total of 15 weeks. In Australia, Not Gonna Get Us was awarded a gold record for over 35,000 singles sold.

In the United States, Not Gonna Get Us was only released as a promo single and did not reach a chart position on the Billboard Hot 100 . On the other hand, a remix of the song made by Dave Audé was very successful , which is included as Dave Audé Extension 119 Club Vocal Mix on the promo singles and reached number one on the US dance / club charts. tATu are the first and to date the only Russian band to reach the top of the US dance / club charts.

In December 2005, the BMI presented Iwan Schapovalov and Jelena Kiper with the BMI Pop Award. Every year the BMI honors the most successful music producers and songwriters with this award . It is estimated that Not Gonna Get Us was played on radio around the world around half a million times in 2003.

Music video

The music video for the song begins with close-up shots of Volkovas and Katinas , who are on a sealed off military airfield and seem to be fleeing from something or someone. You get into a tanker truck, break through the barriers and drive on an empty road through the Siberian winter landscape . In the process, they run over a road worker who is embodied by Ivan Shapovalov, manager and producer of the group. The rest of the video consists of recordings of the two singers in and on the driver's cab as well as of the truck itself. The video is interrupted by superimposed childhood photos. At the end you can see the truck racing into the distance, Katina and Wolkowa standing tightly embraced in the driver's cab. The remix videos belonging to the song also contain other scenes and show Wolkowa and Katina, for example, chained together on the street.

Jelena Kiper explained in a newspaper interview conducted in 2011 that the plot of Not Gonna Get Us ties in with that of All the Things She Said . In All the Things She Said shows how much the two girls love each other, while not understood by their fellow man or why not rejected. In Not Gonna Get Us , the two protagonists finally leave all this behind and flee from those who do not want to allow their love.

The music video for Not Gonna Get Us is almost identical to the one for the Russian version Nas ne dogonjat , only the lip-sync was changed and the sound was copied with the English version of the song. Ivan Shapovalov was the director of both versions. The music video achieved high broadcast rates on European music channels, for example in Great Britain and Germany.

criticism

Many music critics praised the breakbeats at the beginning of the song, but the voices of the two singers, which supposedly changed their pitch on the computer, were often criticized. In the British program Music Week , Not Gonna Get Us was described as "shiny and sparkling pop", which has a good chance of continuing the success of All the Things She Said . The chorus is "wonderfully sullen", but doesn't get on your nerves. The online portal StarOnline was also largely positive. Not Gonna Get Us is fresh, light and accentuated and also has some decent sound effects.

tATu were nominated for the song in 2003 at the MTV Europe Music Awards as "Best Russian Act". Pitchfork listed the song as 33rd of the best singles of 2003 and called it the best love song of the year.

Soundtrack

Not Gonna Get Us belongs to the soundtrack of the film The Code from 2009. It is played at the end of the film and during the credits. The Russian-language version Nas ne dogonjat also appears in the film, but in an unofficial remix version.
