Bely Plaschtschik ( Russian Белый плащик ; German "White Robe") is a song by the Russian pop duo tATu from 2007. It was released as the first single from their third Russian-language studio album, Wesjolyje Ulybki , and was available both as a download and in a limited edition distributed as a physical maxi single. The English version of White Robe was published on October 30, 2009.

prehistory

After tATu made a worldwide comeback with All About Us in 2005 , the duo again failed to establish themselves as a long-term successful band on the western music market. The following single releases had only limited success outside of Russia and Eastern Europe. On August 30, 2006, the contract with the record label Universal / Interscope was terminated by mutual agreement . Further publications of the band appeared under the record label TA Music, which was specially founded by the tATu management, but a second successful comeback in the West without a large, global record label turned out to be increasingly difficult. Therefore, the main focus was placed on the Russian music market from the start, and work on a third Russian-language album began. The recording of English-language songs, which Dangerous and Moving / Ljudi Inwalidy had taken at the same time as the Russian- language songs, was postponed for the time being.

Emergence

Bely Plaschtschik is based on three poems by Maria Maksakowa, a 16-year-old tATu fan from St. Petersburg . Maksakowa sent this to the tATu management, and the latter combined the three independent poems into one coherent song text. Wanja Kilar composed a suitable melody and Robert Orton was responsible for the mixing.

Music video

The music video for the song begins with a brief fade-in of a dimly lit, empty corridor. In the following shot you can see Jelena Katina who, judging by her clothes, works as a prostitute and is on her way home. In the following scenes, shots of Katina and Volkova alternate. Katina takes off her clothes, lies down on her bed for a short time and then puts on a black uniform. At the same time Wolkowa is shown lying on a bed in a prison cell, she washes herself and receives her executioner's meal . While brushing her teeth, she spits angrily against the mirror, throws the tray with her last meal on the floor before the execution and mocks the guards. Katina drives into prison in a black limousine, the gate is besieged by a group of journalists. At the same time, Volkova is led out of her cell, guided through the corridor shown above and chained to a pole, in front of which the execution squad, led by Katina, takes a stand. Only now does it become apparent to the viewer that Volkova is pregnant. While several people are celebrating exuberantly on a raised auditorium and cheerfully watching the imminent shooting, Katina moored and executed the prisoner. After the bullets fired, the music ends and a siren sounds, followed by a ringing phone. Katina turns her head in the direction of the audience, then the video fades out.

According to their own statement, Katina and Wolkowa take a stand against abortion with the music video for the song. The title of the song can also be understood as an allusion to Katina's double life. In the video, she appears as a prostitute as well as an apparently decent commander of the firing squad that Volkova presumably shoots for the same offense.

The music video premiered on November 29, 2007 on the music channel MTV Russia . An uncensored version was also later released, but never aired on television. tATus Management published a recommendation to only watch the music video if you are 14 years of age or older. The video was shot on October 6th and 7th, 2007 at the Hyperion Recycling Plant, a waste recycling site in Los Angeles . James Cox was the director, Billy Parks the producer and Joe Labisi the cameraman. This team had already shot the video for All About Us and Ljudi Inwalidy . A total of 30 people were involved in the video shoot. Volkova was six months pregnant at the time of shooting, but decided to take the long flight from Moscow to Los Angeles anyway .

success

Bely Plaschtschik reached number 15 in the Russian charts and lasted for 19 weeks. However, the single missed the chart entry in other charts outside of Russia. However, the music video was broadcast very frequently by various Russian music channels such as MTV Russia, which can also be received across national borders. However, Bely Plaschtschik did not get beyond a nomination in the category Best Video of the Year at the MTV Russia Video Awards 2008 .

The song was available as a limited maxi single under the name Hyperion-plate "Bely Plaschtschik" with an additional DVD and as a download. This physical maxi-single is sold exclusively through the official tATu internet shop.
