history

State map of the Altenburger Land district

Grünberg was first mentioned in a document on May 29, 1214. It cannot be proven which of the two places existed first. But Obergrünberg is more likely, as it also has a village church. The once separate villages can only be recognized by the historical town centers. The construction of single-family houses between the two villages was the cause of the growing together.

Niedergrünberg is one of the few places in today's Altenburger Land district that historically did not belong to Saxony-Altenburg. Together with its neighboring towns of Obergrünberg and Heyersdorf , Niedergrünberg formed the northern tip of the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon District of Zwickau , which protruded into the Altenburger Land. The manor over the place was until the 19th century with the manor Frankenhausen . In 1856 Niedergrünberg was affiliated with the Crimmitschau court office and in 1875 with the Zwickau administration . In 1925 the place had 190 inhabitants, while Obergrünberg had 389.

On August 1, 1936, Ober- and Niedergrünberg were merged to form the community of Grünberg. With the second district reform in the GDR, the municipality of Grünberg and the neighboring municipality of Heyersdorf were assigned to the Schmölln district in the Leipzig district in 1952 . On November 1, 1973, Grünberg was incorporated into Ponitz. With the reintroduction of the federal states on the territory of the former GDR, Grünberg came to Thuringia for the first time in its history with the district of Schmölln. In terms of church, however, Grünberg still belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Saxony . Since 1994 the place has been in the Altenburger Land district. Niedergrünberg owns 13 Altenburg four-sided courtyards .
