All About Us ( Engl. "All about us") is a song by the Russian band tATu was in its second English-language album in August 2005 Dangerous and Moving decoupled, but also on the Russian-language version Ljudi Inwalidy to find. After worldwide success in 2002 and 2003, tATu disappeared from the scene due to the delayed release of their second album outside of Russia, but with their comeback single they managed to make it into the top 10 of the European charts. The song was written by Josh Alexander and Billy Steinberg.

Music video

The music video for the song was directed by James Cox in Los Angeles . As with previous tATu releases, All About Us also used the music video for targeted provocation.

Summary

The music video begins with a recording of the two singers Jelena Katina and Julija Wolkowa in a sports car, and All the Things She Said is played on the car radio - a reference to their first English-language single.

In a Korean restaurant, an argument breaks out between the two singers, in the course of which Volkova storms out of the restaurant furiously. A sports car stops next to her and the driver, played by Charlie Koznik, offers to take her with him. She accepts the offer and gets in. At the same time, Katina goes looking for Wolkowa and tries to reach her on her cell phone. Volkova has meanwhile arrived at the man's apartment or hotel room, where they both begin to sleep together. The man begins to get brutal, Volkova breaks free and yells at him. This then beats Volkova. But she manages to escape the man again for a short time, finds a pistol on the ground and shoots him. Wolkowa then climbs over the fire escape from the room onto the street, where she meets Katina again.

The most violent scenes are missing in the censored version of the music video. In Germany only this cut version could be shown.

Publication and Success

All About Us reached the top 10 in most European countries and sixth in the pan-European charts. In Germany and Switzerland , the singing duo achieved a second Top 10 hit with the piece, in Austria and Great Britain tATu were represented there for the third time, and in Russia for the ninth time. In all of the countries mentioned, All About Us should be tATu's last single release, which was among the ten best songs on the charts. In the Czech Republic , All About Us did not get above number six, in Sweden and Hungary not above number eight in the charts. In the United States of America the song reached number 13 on the "Dance Club Songs Charts" and lasted for three weeks. The single was awarded a platinum record in Russia. In Japan, where the single was only released on September 1, All About Us made it to number 15 on the charts, where it was represented for a total of nine weeks.

criticism

The song received mixed reviews. US Billboard Magazine criticized the chorus as “almost identical to All the Things She Said, ruling: “Your first song was a real pop bomb, but this duo screamed Wolf so loud that its status as a one-hit -Wonder is absolutely justified. "The phrase" screamed so loudly wolf "refers to the fable The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf , and is intended to express that tATu no longer appear credible after their pretended lesbian image.

The online music portal Pitchfork also drew a comparison with All the Things She Said , but came to a positive conclusion. Both songs have the same structure and contain a good refrain. However, Pitchfork found the plaintive vocal part attached to the chorus in All About Us to be better than in tATu's first big hit. The music video for the single was rated as an "ode to friendship".

On the British music show CD: UK , All About Us was described as "meaningful and powerful, with a good melody". Particular emphasis was placed on the meaning of the lyrics, which appeal to young people and are much more meaningful than those of most punk-rock songs. tATu as a duo was described by CD: UK as “the most exciting pop act in years”, because with All About Us they again managed to distance themselves from “shady marketing” and “give teenagers independence and parents fear”.
