The Gutskapelle Bergen is the chapel of the former Bergen Commandery in the village of Bergen, part of the city of Wanzleben-Börde .

Architecture and history

The chapel was built on a rectangular floor plan in the late Romanesque / early Gothic period and consists of a nave and a retracted choir to the east. The different wall alignments are balanced out by two large arched panels. The manor chapel is the oldest preserved building of the commandery. In the south wall of the chapel there are arched windows, in the north side there are two small ogival windows and a arched portal. The portal is more recent and was added during a redesign of the chapel under Hans von Lossow between 1573 and 1576.

Further buildings are built directly to the east and west of the chapel. The Komtur's house, also built by Hans von Lossow, adjoins to the east and has a tower on its eastern side. The chapel itself does not have a tower. Another residential building is adjacent to the west.

The interior of the chapel has a flat roof. There is a gallery on the west and north side , which is dated to 1576. The oldest pieces of the chapel are two small stone sculptures, possibly depicting Christ enthroned and a Mother of God, and were made in the second half of the 12th century. The inscription of the baroque altarpiece dates from 1689 and shows a representation of the Lord's Supper. Above it is a graceful Calvary in late Gothic style, which is framed by twisted columns and cheeks made of cartilage . A representation of the baptism of Jesus can be seen above a cornice . It is framed by fluted pilasters .

The pulpit with pictorial representations of Christ Salvator and the evangelists, which are each located in fields framed with round arches, probably dates from the 18th century .

Noteworthy are four tombstones of knights on the walls of the chapel . Including the one probably created by Sebastian Ertle for Hans von Lossow , who died in 1605 . The inscription on the tombstone reads:

ANNO DNI. 1605. THE 26TH MARTII OBIIT REVERENDUS, NOBILIS ET STRENUUS VIR. D. JOH. DE LOSSAU BALLIO. SAXON. COMMENDATOR GENERALIS CUIJUS ANIMA REQUIESCAT

Translated into German, the inscription means:

In the year of the Lord 1605 on April 26th, the honorable, noble and strict Mr. Johann von Lossau, the Saxon Ballei Commendator General, died, whose soul was at rest.

However, von Lossow himself was buried in Magdeburg Cathedral . Another tombstone stands for Henning von Bryzken, who died in 1611 . The other two stones were erected for nobles in 1595 and 1597.
