Commandery of Bergen

Bergen is a village in the town of Groß Rodensleben in the city of Wanzleben-Börde in the Magdeburg Börde in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located southwest of Groß Rodensleben and north of Remkersleben . There is a pond south of the village.

history

A first written reference dates back to 1093 when the Magdeburg canon Liudolf Werder place the at Göttingen located monastery Bursfelde gave.

In 1272 the Teutonic Knight Order acquired the village and set up a commandery . The village of Bergen ceased to exist after 1370, but the manor was preserved. In 1570 Hans von Lossow became commander of the order in Bergen. After the estate fell temporarily to Sweden during the Thirty Years' War , however, it came back into the possession of the order, in which it remained until 1806.

In the environment of the local situation, shallow lakes and were due to the location in a low outflows lowland fens . These were drained in the 18th century. Due to the high salt content, the agricultural use of the drained areas turned out to be difficult.

Several private landowners changed hands in the 19th century. After 1900 the estate belonged to the Rabbethge family who grew and processed sugar beet on a large scale in the Magdeburg Börde. In 1910 Bergen, which existed as an independent manor district , had 155 inhabitants. After the estate districts were dissolved, Bergen remained an independent municipality until it was incorporated into Groß Rodensleben on March 1, 1970. Together with Groß Rodensleben, Bergen was incorporated into the city of Wanzleben-Börde on October 1, 2010.

Buildings

The partially preserved historical buildings of the former Bergen Commandery are now listed and characterize the townscape. The Bergen Manor Chapel deserves a special mention. In the immediate vicinity there is also the listed villa at Friedensstrasse 43 .

Personalities

The composer and musician Alfred Pechau (1921–2008) was born in Bergen .

In 1605 the long-time Commander Hans von Lossow (1523-1605) died in Bergen. The sugar manufacturer Erich Rabbethge (1870-1934) also died in the village.
