Sebastian Ertle
Sebastian Ertle (also Erdtle, Ertlin, Oertle; * around 1570 in Überlingen ; † after 1612 in Magdeburg ) was a stonemason and sculptor .
Ertle worked as a stonemason in Magdeburg from 1595/1597 to 1612 and was a very respected artist. In particular, he created epitaphs for many patricians and country nobles. His works were characterized in particular by artistically demanding, very realistic images of the deceased.
By 1601 at the latest, Ertle is said to have worked as a leading employee or even “co-master” in Magdeburg Cathedral. There is evidence that he was a citizen of Magdeburg. His workshop was on the Prälatenberg in the Magdeburg "artist suburb " Sudenburg . One of his journeymen was Christoph Dehne , who later ran a successful workshop himself.
Ertles was known for Johann von Lossow's epitaph in Magdeburg Cathedral , which was destroyed during World War II. It is assumed that the epitaph , which was also created for Johann von Lossow and is located in the Bergen Gutskapelle, also comes from him. In the Magdeburg Cathedral, however, other of his works, such as the prospectus of the cathedral organ created in 1604, with some movable figures, have been preserved. The epitaph for Franz von Trotha in the Hecklingen monastery church is also attributed to him. In Gut Athensleben there is a frieze made by him in 1602 with 13 coats of arms of members of the Magdeburg cathedral chapter and the governor. For Caspar von Kannenberg , who died in 1605 , Ertle made an alabaster epitaph that has been preserved in Halberstadt Cathedral . In 1609 he created a stately epitaph for the bailiff Melchior von Arnstedt and his wife Katharina von Hünicke , which has been preserved in the Sankt-Georg-Kirche in Jerichow .
