Ivan Shapovalov ( Russian Иван Николаевич Шаповалов * 28. May 1966 in Kotowo ) is a Russian music producer and music manager, especially through his work with the electro - Duo t.ATu famous nationally. Schapowalow was manager of the group from 1999 to 2004 and during this period also worked as a director for almost all music videos and as a producer and co-writer for many songs .

Career in the advertising industry

Schapovalov was born on May 28, 1966 in Kotowo, southern Russia, as the son of Nikolai Alexandrowitsch Schapovalov, an artist, and Nadezhda Richardowona, a physics teacher. His mother encouraged him to attend a physics school.

In 1990 he successfully completed his studies in child psychology in Saratov . In Balakowo he ran a private practice as a child psychologist. In 1992 he finally switched to the advertising industry and worked as a marketing and advertising manager. From 1993 he was employed in the marketing branch of the Slavia insurance company in Moscow . From 1994 he worked as a freelance writer for advertising film scripts. At first he had to work as a taxi driver from time to time, but over time he got more and more jobs. In 1996 he worked on the campaign for the successful re-election of Dimitri Ayatskows as governor and also for the computer company R&K. This was co-founded by Boris Renski, and in the course of their collaboration, Shapowalow and Renski became friends. In 1998, Shapovalov was involved in the shooting of a television commercial for the drinks company OST. Here he met for the first time with Jelena Katina , who took over a vocal part in the advertising film. After filming, he met Jelena Kiper , who was employed as a journalist at the NTW broadcaster at the time .

Manager and producer of tATu

In 1999, Shapovalov organized a singing casting in Moscow with Alexander Wojtinski, whom he had also met in the mid-1990s. The reason for this was the financial and economic crisis that dominated Russia at the time, and the resulting shortage of advertising orders. Jelena Katina was selected as the winner from the 500 applicants. At the beginning it was planned to let Katina appear as a singer at anti-war rock concerts, which should be directed against the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia ( Operation Allied Force ), for which the song Yugoslavia had already been recorded. But after a short time it was decided to form a duo consisting of Jelena Katina and Julija Wolkowa , who had previously only been shortlisted for the casting. The two girls were supposed to appear under the name tATu , and shock by breaking taboos and publicly displaying sexuality. Alexander Wojtinski got out of the project because he saw it as too immoral. Shapovalov always defended tATu as a representation of love in a different, previously suppressed form, namely that between two girls. He described this relationship as the “purest form of love”, since it has no reproductive character but is based only on mutual affection.

To implement his tATu project, Shapovalov largely relied on his circle of friends. Boris Renski financed the project, while Jelena Kiper was responsible for the composition of the songs together with Sergio Galoyan and Valeri Poljenko. Schapovalov himself acted as manager and producer, but also as director of the music videos and as co-author of the songs.

In December 2000, Ja soschla s uma tATu's first single was released. The song and accompanying music video, which caused some controversy, became a huge hit first in Russia and then in the former Eastern Bloc countries. In Russia, Ja soschla s uma was number one in the charts for 18 weeks, the music video achieved extremely high broadcast ratings on the music channels MTV Russia and MUZ-TV . The following year, 200 Po Wstretschnoi , the duo's debut album, and Nas ne dogonjat, their second single, were released. In 2002 and 2003 tATu became world famous with their English-language publications, especially their single All the Things She Said and the album 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane .

In early December 2003, production of the band's second Russian album began under the working title Podnebesnaya . The duo was accompanied by a television team led by director Vitali Manski, and the recordings were broadcast as a reality show on the Russian private broadcaster STS under the title “ tATu в Поднебесной ” ( tATu w Podnebesnoi - “tATu under the sky”) . Instead of the two tATu singers, however, mainly Shapovalov and his other projects were shown. In addition, the two singers demanded more co-determination within the group for themselves, were dissatisfied with the songs presented by Schapovalov and with his way of working, which, according to Katina and Volkova, was mainly aimed at putting him in the public eye. There were also several major missteps by Shapovalov during a tATu promotional tour through Japan . Among other things, he turned down an advertising deal worth two million dollars and asked the two singers to leave a live show on Japanese television in the middle of the program. As a result, the duo's popularity fell rapidly in Japan, and concert tickets for the Me Love Tour show in Tokyo were selling extremely slowly. Katina and Wolkowa therefore did not renew their contract with Shapovalov at the beginning of 2004 and parted ways with him as manager, producer and video director. In the same year Shapovalov released the album Podnebesnaya No. 1 in Russia, which has the well-known tATu lettering on the cover. The album only contains one track by the girl duo, which in turn is just a demo recording by Katina. Otherwise it only contains songs by other artists who worked with Shapovalov.

Further projects according to tATu

In September 2004, Shapovalov presented himself to the public with his new project: for September 11, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , he planned appearances by the Islamic singer Nato in Moscow as “terror concerts” , which, however, were carried out by the Russian government were banned. Already in the following year Natalja Shevlyakova separated from her manager and producer, because he wanted to make her famous as a burqa-wearing "terror singer" NATO. Shevlyakova, however, distanced himself from this marketing strategy, which, as with tATu, was based on scandals and breaking taboos.

Other projects followed, such as the rock band 7B , for which Schapowalow acted as a producer. In 2007 he co-founded the online website Mp3search.ru, which was sued by the Russian music label Gala Records that same year for unpaid license fees. The release of songs by the singer MakSim was explicitly mentioned without obtaining the consent of Gala Records. After the lost trial, Shapovalov disappeared from the public for good. In the following years he was still active as a songwriter and video director for various bands, but these were always unknown newcomers, none of whom had great success. Shapovalov left Moscow and now lives again in his hometown of Kotowo.

After the dissolution of his former project tATu in 2011, Schapovalov tried to collaborate with Katina and Wolkowa in the course of the solo careers of both singers. Katina declined to work together again.

Private life

Ivan Schapovalov has a son named Vladimir and is married to Valeryy Shapovalova. After the lack of further success and the failure of various new projects, it largely disappeared from the public around 2005. In August 2012, various Russian media reported unanimously that Shapovalov had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor . This news was later confirmed by family members. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy in a Moscow clinic . In November 2013, Shapovalov stated in various interviews that he was on the mend and that he had changed his name to Shapovalov-Podnebesnyj.

Trivia

  • Shapovalov was sued twice by the Russian DJ and songwriter Sergio Galoyan , who had composed and texted a number of songs for tATu: First in 2001, when Galoyan saw himself defamed by statements made by Shapovalov and injured in his honor, and also for his own Work had not been paid as agreed. Shapovalov had to pay the Armenian-born DJ 20,000 rubles as compensation by court order. Galoyan filed the second lawsuit in 2003 because he was not named as the person responsible for the lyrics of various songs in the album booklet of 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane , although All the Things She Said and Not Gonna Get Us are translations of the Russian versions of the songs for which he was responsible.
  • In 2003, Shapovalov announced that he would register tATu for the Russian presidential elections . In the end, however, this did not happen because the two singers did not reach the minimum age of 35 years required for candidates.
  • Also in 2003, Schapovalov directed the video shoot for tATu's music video Show Me Love as a director. The video shoot took place in London , Tokyo , Moscow and Los Angeles . A call had previously been launched that young girls in school uniforms should come together, as they should appear in the music video together with the two tATu singers. 300 girls answered the call. Since Shapovalov was filming in front of the Moscow Kremlin despite the lack of a filming permit, the police arrested him for a few hours and the video shoot was broken. The music video was nevertheless completed, but it was not published for advertising purposes.
  • In 2004, Shapovalov hit the headlines when it became known that he and tATus, then PR manager and press spokeswoman Beata Ardeewa , had consumed marijuana in front of the camera in the television documentary Anatomija tATu . The Moscow city administration accused him of trivializing drugs after commenting on Julija Volkova's statements about her experience with drugs.
