Amphidium (German band moss ) is a genus of deciduous mosses and the only one in the family Amphidiaceae .

features

The plants are small to medium in size and form a dense lawn or cushion. The stem cross-section has a central strand. The lanceolate to linear or tongue-shaped leaves with a simple vein are moist, upright, and dryly crinkled. The leaf margins are often bent back below, sawn or serrated above. The rectangular to rounded-square lamina cells are papillary. Leaf-wing cells are not differentiated.

The species are diocesan or autocratic. The short seta has a pear-shaped capsule; a peristome is absent. The lid is spiky or beaked, the kalyptra is cap-shaped. Spores are (almost) smooth.

Systematics and types

The systematic position of the genus Amphidium was handled differently in the past, partly it was assigned to the family Dicranaceae , partly to the family Orthotrichaceae . Recently it has been listed as the only genus in the newly created family Amphidiaceae Stech within the order Dicranales due to molecular data and characteristics of the cellular network and the leaf veins .

The genus, which is cosmopolitan and distributed in the northern and southern hemisphere, has 12 species. In the area of Germany, Austria and Switzerland the following two species are represented:
