Westhofen Office (Hanau-Lichtenberg)
The Westhofen office (also: " Westhofen and Balbronn Office " or " Balbronn Office ") was an office of the Lichtenberg rule , later the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg , from which it passed to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt .
history
In the 15th century the Westhofen office was small and included only Balbronn , Traenheim and Westhoffen . Anna von Lichtenberg (* 1442; † 1474), one of the two heirlooms of Ludwig V von Lichtenberg (* 1417; † 1474) married Count Philip I the Elder of Hanau-Babenhausen (* 1417; † 1480), one of them had received a small secondary school from the holdings of the County of Hanau in order to be able to marry her. The county of Hanau-Lichtenberg came into being through the marriage. After the death of the last Lichtenberger, Jakob von Lichtenberg , an uncle of Anna, Philipp I. d. Ä. 1480 half of the Lichtenberg rule . This also included the Westhofen office.
In 1570 there was another significant inheritance: Count Jakob von Zweibrücken-Bitsch (* 1510; † 1570) and his brother Simon V. Wecker , who died in 1540, each left only one daughter as heir. Count Jakob's daughter, Margaretha (* 1540; † 1569), was married to Philipp V von Hanau-Lichtenberg (* 1541; † 1599). The legacy resulting from this constellation in favor of the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg included, among other things, the County of Zweibrücken-Bitsch and the Ochsenstein dominion associated with it . A significant part of their territory was subsequently added to the Westhofen office, so that it became one of the extensive offices of the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg.
As a result of France's reunion policy in 1680, considerable parts of the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg in Alsace fell under the sovereignty of France . This also included the Westhofen office.
1736 died with Count Johann Reinhard III. the last male representative of the Hanau family. Due to the marriage of his only daughter, Charlotte (* 1700; † 1726), with the Hereditary Prince Ludwig (VIII.) (* 1691; † 1768) of Hesse-Darmstadt , the county of Hanau-Lichtenberg fell there. In the course of the French Revolution , the left bank of the Hanau-Lichtenberg county - and with it the Westhofen office - fell to France. In the course of the revolutionary restructuring of the administration, this also dissolved the old official administration.
According to a census from May 1798, the office had 5,463 inhabitants.
