Hurtigheim ( German : Hürtigheim , historically also: Hirtigheim ) is a French commune with 834 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Saverne .

geography

Hurtigheim is 13 kilometers northwest of Strasbourg . The Souffel flows through the municipality.

history

Hurtigheim is located on the former Roman road from Argentorate (Strasbourg) to Tres Tabernae ( Saverne ), the route of which the Départementstraße still follows in sections.

middle Ages

Half of Hürtigheim belonged to the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg . This share was subordinate to the Hanau-Lichtenberg Office Westhofen .

The church of Hürtigheim was a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Valentin von Terni , which was intended to provide relief especially for epileptics . Protestant services have been held in the church since 1541 . The pilgrims continued to visit the place until 1866.

Early modern age

With the reunion policy of France under King Louis XIV , the Westhofen and Hürtigheim offices came under French sovereignty. After the death of the last Hanau count, Johann Reinhard III. , the inheritance - and with it half of Hürtigheim - fell in 1736 to the son of his only daughter, Charlotte , the hereditary prince and later Landgrave Ludwig (IX.) of Hesse-Darmstadt . With the upheaval started by the French Revolution , Hürtigheim became French.

Contemporary history

On January 1, 2015, the municipality moved from the Arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne to the Arrondissement Saverne .

Culture and sights

The church was built in the 14th century. The bell tower is the only element of the building that has survived from the Middle Ages . The top row of Gothic windows were reopened in 1863 and 1864, and the aedicula was enlarged when the nave was rebuilt.

The entrance gate to the cemetery is dated 1717.

traffic

The former train station was built in 1903 and closed in 1956 when the Dingsheim – Westhoffen tram line operated by the Compagnie des transports strasbourgeois was shut down.

economy

The last water mill operated by the Souffel ceased operations in 1944. There is an electrically powered mill that was built in 1929 and is still in operation.

Important branches of business are agriculture , especially milk production and viticulture . There is also a tree nursery .
