The building was built in 1850 from demolition material from the old collegiate church. Since 1850/55 it has been the seat of the judicial authority, which was created in 1821 with the formation of the Hünfeld district. Around 1855, after the "Großenbacher Tor" city gate was demolished, the prison there was relocated to the district court building. The prison probably remained here until after the construction of the new town hall in 1891/95.

The main office of the court is located at Hauptstrasse 24 . The dunning department is located at Stiftsstraße 6 .

Between the main building and the collegiate church, three questions from the German philosopher and communication scientist Siegfried J. Schmidt were placed on a facade. The three terms “power”, “right” and “moral” are used permutatively by him as three questions. He only asks the question, the reader should give himself the answer.

Superior courts

The District Court of Fulda is superordinate to the District Court of Hünfeld . The competent higher regional court is the higher regional court in Frankfurt am Main .
