On the Vltava

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On the Moldau is a polka- french by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 366). The work was performed for the first time on October 25, 1874 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein .

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta Die Fledermaus . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 362 , 363 , 365 , 367 and 368 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. The main theme of the polka comes from the ballet music from the second act of the bat . However, this is no longer played in many operettas today or is replaced by interludes from other works by Strauss or other composers. In the original version, the dance on which this polka is based is subject to the text Marianka, come and dance me here . In the polka, however, parts from the third act of the operetta are still quoted, such as the songs A strange adventure and O bat, o bat, finally leave out your sacrifice .

The title of the polka refers to the ballet music addressed, which consists of five national dances. Among them is a bohemian polka. The fact that the Vltava flows through Bohemia gives rise to the name of the polka. Strangely enough, this polka is not listed in the few surviving programs of the Strauss Chapel.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 4 minutes and 14 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
