Anastassija Oleksandriwna Kowaltschuk ( Ukrainian Анастасія Олександрівна Ковальчук , English transcription: Anastasiya Kovalchuk ; born  November 8, 1991 in Kremenchuk ) is a Ukrainian billiard player who plays in the Russian billiards variant .

She was runner-up in the Free Pyramid discipline in 2016 and 2018 . In addition, the nine-time Ukrainian champion was vice European champion in 2014 .

Life

Kovalchuk was born in 1991 in Kremenchuk , where she grew up. After graduating from school, she began studying English and German at the University of Economics, Information Technology and Management in her hometown in 2008 .

Her hobbies include poker , which she plays in a sports poker club.

Career

2003–2011: beginnings and first successes

Anastassija Kovalchuk was a successful dancer in her youth and achieved second and third place in Ukrainian championships. She began playing billiards at the age of twelve after becoming aware of the sport through her dance partner at the time.

After 2006 had reached the quarter-finals, scored Kovalchuk in 2007 its first major hit when released in the European Youth Championships moved into the final, where they the Russian Nadezhda Demchenko with 1: 5 defeated. In the same year she made her European Cup debut . After she was in the top eight again at the European Youth Championship in 2008 , she made it to the European Cup in Khmelnyzkyj for the first time beyond the preliminary round and finally reached the quarter-finals, in which she lost to Anna Majstrenko . The following year she reached the second round in the European Cup.

At the beginning of 2011 she took part in the Ukrainian championships for adults for the first time and won her first medals. While she was eliminated in the combined pyramid in the semifinals against Viktorija Iwanowa , she secured her first championship title in the Free Pyramid when she prevailed 4-1 in the final against Tetjana Tutschak . Her first European Championship participation followed a little later, but it ended in the preliminary round. In August 2011 she moved into the final of the Ukrainian Independence Cup and lost 3: 5 to Shanna Schmattschenko . Two months later she played in Kiev for the first time at the World Cup , in which she won in the preliminary round against Kazjaryna Perepechayeva , among others , but finally missed the entry into the final round. In the same year she began to take part in the World Cup, but was mostly eliminated early.

2012–2015: international breakthrough

In May 2012, Kovalchuk made it to the semi-finals of the Ukrainian Cup for the first time. Two weeks later, she also won her first medal at the European Championships in 2012 , when she defeated former world champion Olga Milovanova and only lost to Wolha Dabryjan in the semi-finals . In September she achieved her first tournament victory in the Ukrainian Cup with a 5-4 final win against Marija Pudowkina . Two weeks later, she defended her title at the Free Pyramid Championship in the final against Anna Kotljar 5-2. A little later she reached the quarter-finals of the Free Pyramid World Cup, which she lost to Wolha Dabryjan, and the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup , in which she was defeated by Olga Milowanova, before she was eliminated in the preliminary round at the Dynamic Pyramid World Cup . At the end of the year she won the final of the Ukrainian Cup in the final against Marija Pudowkina 4: 3.

In early 2013, Kovalchuk became Ukrainian Champion in the Combined Pyramid for the first time after beating Alissa Loboda 4-3 in the final . A little later she reached the final in the cup, but now had to admit defeat Marija Pudowkina 2: 4. After she had won the bronze medal at the second cup tournament of the year, she reached the quarter-finals at the Free Pyramid World Cup, in which she lost to her compatriot Valerija Wassyljewa 4: 5. As in the previous year, she reached the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup and was defeated this time by the Russian Polina Yaroschewitsch . At the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup there was a new edition of the previous year's final, in which Kovalchuk, however, now had to admit defeat to Maria Pudovkina 0: 4.

In May 2014, Kovalchuk won the Mayor's Cup in Moscow after defeating defending champion Diana Mironova 5-2 in the final . A few weeks later there was another final meeting of the two at the European Championship , in which Kowaltschuk now had to admit defeat 2: 5. In September she reached the semi-finals at the Minsk Open and a little later she was eliminated from the Kremlin Cup in the second round. At the Free Pyramid World Cup in 2014, she failed in the quarter-finals for the third time in a row, this time to Sarjana Prytuljuk . In December 2014 she won the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup after not getting past a fifth place in the tournaments of the series that year.

In early 2015, Kovalchuk became Ukrainian champion in the combined pyramid for the second time in a row with a 4-2 final win against Marija Pudowkina . After she was eliminated in the World Cup in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals at the 2015 European Championship , she won the Ukrainian Cup (5: 1) and the championship in the Dynamic Pyramid (4: 1) with two final wins against Marija Pudowkina . In October 2015 she won her first World Championship medal when she defeated defending champion Olga Milowanowa at the Dynamic Pyramid World Championship in Imatra, Finland , and lost to future World Champion Diana Mironowa in the semifinals. Then Kovalchuk was eliminated three times in a row in the quarterfinals; at the Kremlin Cup , the World Cup final tournament and the Free Pyramid World Cup.

Since 2016: two times vice world champion

Kovalchuk started 2016 with a second place in the Ukrainian Cup and bronze medals in the Combined Pyramid Championship and the World Cup. At the Mayor's Cup in Moscow, she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. A little later she finished third in the two other national championships of that year and won a cup tournament for the fifth time in the final against Radyka Lyubytsch (4: 3). At the Kremlin Cup 2016 , she was eliminated in the round of 16 against Elina Nagula . In December 2016, at the Free Pyramid World Cup in Kazan , she made it into a World Cup final as the fifth Ukrainian. After defeating defending champion Marija Pudowkina and Kazjaryna Perepechayeva , among others , she had to admit defeat to record world champion Diana Mironova 5-0 in the final . A little later, she lost the final of the Ukrainian Cup final against Anna Kotljar (4: 5).

In April 2017, Kovalchuk took part in the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid for the first time and was eliminated in the first round against Anna Kotlyar. She was eliminated from the following tournaments too, including the Mayor's Cup in Moscow. Only in the second half of the year did she achieve better results when she won a cup tournament 5-0 in the final against Shanna Schmattschenko and in the final against Sarjana Prytuljuk 5-2 for the sixth time Ukrainian champion and for the second time in the dynamic pyramid . Shortly afterwards she reached the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup and lost to Diana Mironova. After finishing third in the Ukrainian Free Pyramid Championship , she won the cup final tournament 5-3 in the final against Anna Kotljar.

At the beginning of 2018, Kovalchuk became Ukrainian champion in the combined pyramid for the third time with a 4-3 final win against Anna Kotljar , making her the sole record winner in this discipline. A little later, she took third place in the triathlon championship out of the three disciplines. At the Dynamic Pyramid World Cup in 2018, she reached the quarter-finals, in which she was only slightly defeated 4-5 by the eventual world champion Kazjaryna Perepechayeva. At the Moscow Mayor's Cup she made it into the final for the second time after 2014 and lost again to Diana Mironova (4-5). After she had reached a quarter-finals in the World Cup and was eliminated in the round of 32 at the Kremlin Cup , she moved into the final of the Free Pyramid World Cup for the second time in a row at the end of the year, in which she, as in 2016, against Diana Mironowa ( 2: 5) lost.

In February 2019, Kovalchuk managed to defend his title at the Ukrainian Championship in the Combined Pyramid in the final against Lyubov Schyhajlowa 4-0. A little later she reached the quarter-finals in the same discipline at the World Cup, in which she was defeated by the Russian Marija Karpowa . At the Moscow Mayor's Cup in 2019, she reached the semifinals and lost there to Diana Mironova. A few weeks later, she was eliminated from the 2019 Free Pyramid World Cup in the semifinals against Mironova. At the end of August 2019, she became national champion in the dynamic pyramid for the third time with a 4-1 final win against Marija Pudowkina .

Pool

Although Kovalchuk had never played pool before, she took part in the Ukrainian championship in 2012 and reached the semi-finals in the 9-ball discipline , in which she lost 4-7 to the eventual champion Kateryna Polovyntschuk . The rules of the game were explained to her by her opponents during the tournament.
