The Anatolian poppy ( Papaver triniifolium ) is a species of the poppy family (Papaveraceae). It is native to Turkey and is very similar to Papaver armeniacum , another Turkish poppy species. There is also a Turkish poppy ( Papaver orientale ).

features

The biennial , herbaceous plant reaches heights of up to 40 centimeters. In the first year, a green-blue leaf rosette with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters forms . It consists of stalked, lanceolate, pinnate leaves that are slightly hairy and up to 20 centimeters long. The individual leaf segments are narrow-oval to elliptical.

In the second year a bare, branched flower stalk develops, on which the flowers are nodding or upright. The radially symmetrical , hermaphrodite flower has a diameter of 2.5 to 4 centimeters. The four free petals are light to scarlet red. The stamens with the yellow anthers sit tightly around the ovary . The upper ovary has 4 to 6 rays on top. The flowering period runs from May to June. The hermaphrodite flowers are pollinated by insects or they pollinate themselves .

The very small seeds escape from the openings under the lid of the slender, 8 to 12 mm long, smooth, gray-green pore capsule when the plant sways in the wind. After the seeds ripen, the plant dies. The seeds are spread by wind .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 28.

The milky juice of the capsule contains poisonous alkaloids of the rhoeadin type, as they are also found in domestic poppies . The alkaloid oreodine dominates . The species is of no importance for the production of narcotics and especially for the production of opium .

Occurrence

The Anatolian poppy is endemic to Turkey in the floral region of northern Armenia . There it can be found on limestone soils and scree slopes at altitudes of 2,000 to 3,400 meters.
