history

In the mid-1860s, German immigrants Otto Schinkel and Ernst F. Baruth began selling beer to local restaurants and bars that they made in a San Francisco brewery on Pacific Avenue between Larkin Street and Hyde Street. In 1896 they founded Anchor Brewing . The brewery initially only sold so-called steam beer from the tap. It is believed that steam beer was fermented at higher temperatures and that the process dates back to the time of the gold rush .

In 1965 the Anchor Brewing Company was bought by its current owner, Frederick Louis Maytag III, as it was about to close. Maytag bought 51 percent of the company for a few thousand dollars and later bought the brewery entirely. In 1979 the brewery moved to its current building.

During the 1980s, Anchor Steam Beer became nationally known in the US and consumption rose dramatically from a few thousand crates of beer that were traditionally produced.

In 1993 the company Anchor Distilling , a small distillery, opened in the same place as the brewery and began producing a single malt whiskey called Old Potrero , named after Potrero Hill in San Francisco, in whose district the distillery is located. Anchor was one of the first distilleries to bring about a revival of rye whiskey in the United States. Anchor produced these in Pot Still - at the time the only distillery in the USA that used them - and made from 100% rye.

Recently, the production of a genever-style gin with the name Genevive began with the ingredients grain, barley, rye and the same herbs as their Junípero ggin.
