And Love Said No - The Greatest Hits 1997-2004 (English for: " And love said no - The greatest hits 1997-2004 ") is the 2004 published greatest hits album by the dark rock band HIM from Finland . After 2.3 million albums sold so far, in Europe alone, the group draws an initial summary.

There are 16 songs on the disc, 14 of which are singles from the previous four albums. The songs Your Sweet Six Six Six and Wicked Game can be found there in newly recorded versions (which were published in various countries, but not in Germany, on Razorblade Romance in 2000 ). In addition, located on the CD two new songs that Neil Diamond -Cover Solitary Man and the eponymous original composition And Love Said No . Both were released as singles ( And Love Said No only in Finland) and music videos were made, again directed by Bam Margera . In the And love said no video you can see the beginning of the 20th century. Fonthill Castle (Location: Pennsylvania ).

Publications and chart placements

In addition to the standard version, the Greatest Hits album was also released in digipak with an additional DVD, on which a concert of six songs in the semifinal in Helsinki on December 4, 2003 can be seen.

Although not a regular studio album, the disc reached number 2 in the Finnish and number 5 in the German charts.

Album design

The design is white with a little blue. It is the last album cover on which singer Ville Valo is shown (of the studio albums, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights , released in 2001, is the last album on which he can be seen on the cover). After that, he didn't want to be shown on new covers, probably also because he was asked repeatedly whether HIM was more of a solo project than a band. The album does not contain a booklet , but a small poster with two current photos from 2004. One is a group photo of the band, the other shows the cover photo in a larger section. Lyrics are not included.

Music style and topic

In And Love Said No , there is a pop - ballad . The song and lyrics are kept simple and don't stand out very much. The text seems a bit overdramatic, e.g. B .; "Kill me", I begged and love said no ( "Kill me", I asked, but love said no ).

On the subject of And Love Said No , Valo said the following:

“[...]" And love said no ". It's about what I have went through the last two years and where I am today. It's a story about a relationship that didn't work so good. About losing all hope about the future when it comes to love and romance, but in some way find the right person in the end of the tunnel. I have a new girlfriend since September last year. We have known each other for a couple of years. She is a Finnish girl who has lived in the States for a few years and recently returned home. [...] ”

"[...]" And love said no ". It's about what I've been through the last two years and where I am now. It's a story about a relationship that didn't work out too well. About to lose all hopes about the future, regarding love and romance; but in a way to find the right person at the end of the tunnel. I have had a new girlfriend since September last year. - Ville Valo; Telephone interview for DarkSecret Club (a fan club) in 2004

The originally slow singer-songwriter song Solitary Man became a pop-rock cover. The following should be mentioned regarding the choice of cover and subject matter: Solitary Man actually comes from Neil Diamond , but is also very well known in the version by Johnny Cash . Probably changed Johnny Cash Neil Diamond line of text from "me and you - that died, too" ( "you and I - that died" ) in "me and Sue - that died, too" ( "I and Sue - that died " ). Valo also sings this line. One can even assume that this line was decisive for the choice of the cover, since Valo's ex-girlfriend is called Susanna. With the two bonus tracks on this compilation album, he most likely processed his failed relationship.
