Tears on tape -

Tears on Tape (English for: tears on tape ) is the eighth studio album by the Finnish band HIM . It was released on April 26, 2013 in Germany. The song of the same name, for which a music video was created, was chosen as the single for Germany.

Album title

According to singer Ville Valo the title refers Tears on Tape ( tears on tape ) to the tears of his musical idols that must have flowed, emerged as some songs.

Album cover

The cover features a painting by Daniel P. Carter. He was given a free hand in designing the cover. In the middle of the painting is the Heartagram ribbon logo, which is surrounded by a heptagram , more precisely the seal of Babylon . The HIM lettering is located between two points on the heptagram . The album title is missing. A white snake winds around the heptagram with the following written in Malachi script: Tears on tape, I will follow into your heart sketching rain from afar. Tears on tape, she surrenders needle in arm while we dance into the storm. These are lyrics from the song Tears on Tape , so the album title can be found on the album cover, hidden by Malachite writing, so to speak. The background of the cover is reminiscent of a stylized sea. In the booklet there are seven other paintings of Daniel Carter, but no pictures of the band members and no lyrics. The lyrics are included in the booklet of the Japanese edition of the album.

History of origin

Rehearsals for the album began in June 2012. In autumn, the recordings took place at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki . The producer was Hiili Hiilesmaa . Mixing was done by Tim Palmer in London.

Since HIM separated from their record company Sire Records at the beginning of 2011, the recordings for the album were self-financed and later licensing rights were given to three different record companies.

In Germany and other European countries, Tears on Tape was released on April 26, 2013 as a standard version (regular edition) in a jewel case, as a limited deluxe edition in a digipack and as a 12 "vinyl LP from the label We Love Music / Universal Music . The Limited Deluxe Edition includes a CD with the album and a DVD with live bonus tracks. The bonus tracks were recorded at Finnvox Studios . The album was released 3 days later in Poland and Russia.

In the USA and Canada, the album was released on April 30, 2013 by the Razor & Tie label. In the Limeted Edition the song Buried Alive by Love (live) is missing from the bonus tracks and When Love And Death Embrace (live) is only included as a digital bonus track. In the USA a limited edition was released as a 12 "vinyl LP (without bonus tracks). The record was produced in four different colors (transparent, cream, blue and green).

On May 1, 2013 the album was released in Japan on the Universal label and in England on May 27, 2013 on the DoubleCross Records / Coocking Vinyl label . The Limited Deluxe Edition has a jewel case in these countries . The Japanese edition comes with a white booklet with the English lyrics.

In Germany and Finland the album reached number 2 in the charts, in Austria at least number 7 and in the USA number 15. In Spain it reached number 31.

Music style and topic

Valo said the instrumental Kiss the Void was sort of an outro to WLSTD .

Information about the video clips

A black and white music video for All Lips go Blue was created for the English and American music market . The backdrop in front of which the band plays was created digitally. You can see an oversized chess game and a stormy sea. Directed by Eugene Riecansky.

Tears on Tape was released as a single in Germany and other European countries. The video clip was filmed in Helsinki and Rome in early March. You can see different places and people who write down Tears on Tape as TOT in Malachi script. In between, scenes are repeatedly faded in in which you can see the band members playing in front of a wall on which water droplets were projected. Directed by Stefan Lindfors.

Into the Night was earmarked as a single for the Finnish music market. Stefan Lindfors also directed this music video. You can see the band and people in hooded robes laying bricks on the floor in the form of a heartagram .

Information on individual songs

  • According to Valo, the title Love Without Tears is derived from a book by Aleister Crowley called Magick without Tears .
  • The title of Tears on Tape is intended to pay homage to the idols of HIM. Ville Valo said that many lines from the song of the same name refer to songs that are very important to him. For example, Tears on Tape starts with Church bells great, thunder roars around me ... which reminds him of the beginning of Black Sabbath's first album. In the beginning of the song Black Sabbath there is the sound of church bells and a thunderstorm. In Tears on Tape there is one line of needle in arm . Ville Valo said he was thinking of the needle on a record player. He compared playing a record (e.g. changing tempo, slipping the needle, etc.) with the ups and downs in life.

Others

  • HIM's website heartagram.com was closed for the three years between the 7th and 8th studio album. For a while you could hear an instrumental piece of music when you were on the HIM homepage. It comes from a solo project by bassist Migé. He wrote an approximately 30-minute album called Cimmerica , which was never released commercially. Sometimes he gave away a record to fans at concerts, which is why the album can now be found on the Internet. The music is purely instrumental and sounds like a mixture of old Walt Disney music and Tim Burton film music .
  • When the album was recorded, a cover of the song Strange World (original by ), which was included on the compilation album XX - Two Decades of Love Metal , released on October 26, 2012, was also created . There is also a music video for this song.
  • It is the last album on which drummer Mika Karppinen, aka Gas Lipstick, was involved. On January 27, 2015, he announced on his Facebook page that he had left the band for good and is now devoting himself to his own musical projects: […] There is no drama, bad blood or any negativity involved in my departure. I simply feel that it's time for me to move on as a musician. [...] . He now lives in the USA.
