Venus Doom (English for: " Venus Damnation ") is the sixth studio album by the Finnish dark rock band HIM . Venus Doom was released on September 14, 2007 in Finland and Germany, three days later in the rest of Europe and on September 18 in the USA and Canada.

Album title

This time, too, an attempt was made to create a contrast in the Yin and Yang style within the title . Venus Doom refers on the one hand to Doom as in Doom Metal ( Doom = English for doom , doom , doom , fate , condemnation , bad fate , death sentence, etc.) and in contrast to Venus , the goddess of love.

Singer Ville Valo also said the following about the album title: "[...] I was thinking of the classic“ femme fatale ”and the chaotic, creative and destructive power of love. That’s what the piece is about. where all ordinary, rational rules simply fail. At least for me love is something that carries you away and makes you its slave. "

In the context of the text of the song of the same name, the word Doom in Venus Doom can best be translated with doom , doom or doom . Among other things, the song says: "All dreams are of you - my Venus Doom" . Venus Doom is most likely a metaphor for a woman who plunges one into ruin (misfortune). The translation is therefore: " All dreams are about you - my Venus ruin (or ... my Venus downfall , possibly also ... my Venus fate or ... Venus fate )".

Album cover

The cover is a painting by the American artist David Harouni, which Valo discovered in his gallery in New Orleans, whereupon he asked for it to be used for the new album. The painting shows an African woman in shades of red. In the booklet there is a photo of the band and the lyrics in Valo's handwriting.

In May 2007, singer Valo went into alcohol withdrawal in Malibu, he said: "You can't call this a rehab album cos I did most of it drunk. [...]" ( "This album cannot be called a rehab album because I did most of it while drunk. […] " ). So the recordings took place before his withdrawal.

The band rehearsed together for about 3 months and did a few demos before the album was recorded in 2 months, the mixing took another 2 weeks. Ville Valo previously collected ideas and wrote the basic structures of the songs over a period of six years. The album was, as most recently Love Metal (2003), produced jointly by Tim Palmer and Hiili Hiilesmaa . In contrast to Dark Light (2005), Venus Doom was not created entirely in the USA, but also in the band's Finnish homeland. The recordings were made in Finnvox Studios in Helsinki , the mixing in Paramount Studios in Los Angeles .

Publications and chart placements

The album was released in three versions. In addition to the standard version, which offers nine songs, a limited digibook was also released, which, in addition to the new artwork, has a bonus CD on which two remixes of Dead Lovers' Lane and Love in Cold Blood can be found. Furthermore, the album exists in a version strictly limited to 1,000 copies, which was published in an elaborate book form and which offers additional content.

The song The Kiss of Dawn was released as a preliminary single on September 7, 2007 , which climbed to second place in the charts in Finland and entered 44th place in Germany. The song Passion's Killing Floor was on the soundtrack to as early as the July 3, 2007 Transformers -Kinofilm heard. Overall, the band's return to their harder roots is considered a success. In her home country Finland, Venus Doom immediately climbed to number 2, and in Germany the record entered the album charts at number 3. The second single was released on December 9, 2007, Bleed Well , but only in Great Britain. The accompanying music video could be seen exclusively on the Internet weeks beforehand. The Maxi-CD was not published in other countries.

Music style and topic

Valo said of Cyanide Sun that this song and Sleepwalking Past Hope were made while on vacation in Lapland and that they sound like film music ( "cinematic" ) to him.

Information about the video clips

Music videos were created for The Kiss of Dawn and Bleed Well . Meiert Avis (director of Wings of a butterfly ) directed both again . For the live DVD Digital Versatile Doom - Live at the Orpheum , concert performances were filmed in Los Angeles on November 15 and 16 . The video clip for Bleed Well was also shot on the second day . Not much happens in either video clip, the band just plays in one room at a time.

For Cyanide Sun , Venus Doom , Love in Cold Blood , Dead Lover's Lane and Passions Killing Floor emerged teaser , each showing a few seconds of a music video. The teasers were obviously all created on the same day and were then digitally edited to get different backgrounds. These videos were apparently never finalized, whether that was the intention and the teasers were only intended to promote the album is unknown.

Information on individual songs

  • HIM never played some songs on the album live: Cyanide Sun , Venus Doom , Love in Cold Blood and Song or Suicide
  • Passion's Killing Floor : The chorus (without the lyrics) was written in 1998 and the main riff in 2001.
  • Cyanide Sun is about his relationship with his ex-fiancée.
  • The Kiss of Dawn dedicated Valo to a friend who committed suicide.
  • Song or Suicide : The title comes from a quote by the folk singer Julee Still .
