Andereggs white-headed owl ( Mythimna andersreggii , syn .: Leucania lineata ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 27 to 34 millimeters. When nominate Mythimna anderreggii anderreggii the color varies front upper wing surface from light brown to dark gray brown. Individual areas in the fringe area are lightened in some copies. The wing veins are white, the copper veins are particularly strong . A black root welt stands out clearly, which often reaches near the outer edge and is cut by the white veins. The kidney defects can sometimes be seen as a very small black point. There is usually a row of small black arrow marks along the hemline. The hind wings are unmarked and dark brown in color. The veins do not stand out from the subsurface, but there is occasionally a black costal spot. In the Balkan Mountains occurring ssp. Mythimna andersreggii pseudocomma shows a darker appearance and the white veins are less prominent.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a light gray-yellow color, a light, dark-edged topline, dark, downwardly lightly delimited secondary ridge lines and gray-brown lateral stripes with an indistinct, lighter center line. The spiracles are black.

Doll

There are three pairs of bristles on the cremaster of the light red-brown doll .

Similar species

Since the somewhat smaller and lighter sister species Mythimna sassanidica occurs in the southern Caucasus , Turkey and Iran , there is no geographical overlap with Mythimna andersreggii .

Andereggs white-tailed owl occurs in the mountains of Europe ( Alps , Apennines , Abruzzo , Pyrenees and Balkan Mountains). It was also found in the North Caucasus, the Hissar Mountains , the Pamir Mountains and the Tian Shan Mountains . The species lives mainly in cool and humid mountain and mountain landscapes. It was found in the Alps up to an altitude of 2500 meters.

Way of life

The moths form one generation per year, which can be found from May to October, depending on the altitude. You are flying towards artificial light sources . Grasses, for example common ball grass ( Dactylis glomerata ), are named as food plants for the caterpillars . The species overwinters as a pupa.

Taxonomy

With a high degree of probability, the species epithet should honor the Swiss Wolfgang Anderegg . However, there was obviously a typographical or printing error in the original description and the species was documented as other reggii (with two "rr"). In some references, the presumably intended spelling Andereggii (with an "r") is used. However, since a typographical or typographical error cannot be proven beyond doubt, according to the nomenclature rules the originally written name andersreggii is to be used. The synonym Leucania lineata can also be found in the literature .
