Death in the north face of the Eiger

Hinterstoisser-Quergang, 2007

On July 18, 1936, Hinterstoißer attempted the first ascent of the Eiger north face together with Toni Kurz . Both were killed in the process, as were the two Austrian mountaineers Willy Angerer and Eduard Rainer, who had teamed up with Hinterstoisser and Kurz on the wall. Due to an injury to Angerer, they had retreated from the wall, where they fell into a sudden fall in the weather. While abseiling, they were probably hit by an avalanche, with Hinterstoißer falling into the valley through a rope break.

Movie

The story was filmed with the actors Florian Lukas (as Andreas Hinterstoißer), Benno Fürmann (as Toni Kurz) and Johanna Wokalek under the direction of Philipp Stölzl . On October 23, 2008 the film with the title Nordwand was released in German cinemas.

In 2007 the British mountaineer Joe Simpson published the documentary Drama in der Eiger-Nordwand , which links Simpson's own story to the death of the four climbers on the north face.
