András Kovács (born June 20, 1925 in Kide, Cluj County , Romania ; † March 11, 2017 in Budapest ) was a Romanian - Hungarian film director and screenwriter .

biography

Kovács first studied psychology , sociology and aesthetics at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj and from 1946 in the directing class of the Budapest Academy of Drama and Film , where he later worked as a university lecturer.

Kovács was invited as a member of the jury to the 5th Moscow International Film Festival, and to the Cannes International Film Festival in 1967 and 1976 . The events surrounding the massacre in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, of 1942 were processed by András Kovács in 1966 in the film Cold Days (Hungarian: original title Hideg napok) based on the novel by Tibor Cseres. He headed the Budapest film studio from 1951 to 1957. In the mid-1980s he was chairman of the Association of Hungarian Film and TV Artists.

Several of his films were shown at the Moscow International Film Festival :

  • 1981 Temporary Paradise , which was awarded the Silver Prize
  • 1985 The Red Countess

For the film A ménesgazda from 1978 he was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1979 .

The 1976 film Labirintus / Labyrinth was shown at documenta 6 in Kassel .
