André Chouraqui
Nathan André Chouraqui (born August 11, 1917 in Ain Temouchent , Algeria , † July 9, 2007 in Jerusalem ) was a French-Israeli lawyer, politician and writer.
Life
André Chouraqui studied law and Jewish law in Paris from 1935 . During the Second World War he was a member of the French Resistance . Among other things, he was part of the support network for Jewish refugees in hiding in the underground in the area around Le Chambon-sur-Lignon for the French Œuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE), a children's aid organization. He worked as a lawyer in Algiers between 1945 and 1947 . In 1948 he received his doctorate at the Sorbonne in Paris .
In 1958 he emigrated to Israel. From 1959 to 1963 he was advisor to the first Israeli prime minister, David Ben-Gurion , and from 1965 deputy to the Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek . Chouraqui is the author of numerous non-fiction books, but also of short stories and plays. He became known for his 26-volume translation of the Bible and the Koran translation into French from 1987 and 1990.
His books have been translated into 16 languages. He has won numerous prizes, including the Tübingen Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize in 1993 and the Raoul Wallenberg Award in 2003 . He was a member of the Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations of Israel , the Association Internationale pour la défense de la liberté religieuse (AIDLR, “International Association for the Defense and Promotion of Religious Freedom, IVVFR”) and a member of the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli International Committee and Raoul Wallenberg -Foundation, endowment.
