André Schaeffner (born February 7, 1895 in Paris ; died August 11, 1980 in Paris) was a French ethnomusicologist .

André Schaeffner studied in Paris at the École du Louvre , the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) and at the Schola Cantorum music academy and initially worked as a music critic . From 1920 he wrote for the music magazine Le Ménestrel , from 1922 for the Revue musicale , and later also for the magazines Contrepoint , Rassegan musicale and the Journal des africanistes . He turned more and more to music-ethnological topics.

From 1929 to 1965 he headed the department for ethnomusicology he founded at the Musée de l'homme . His research trips took him to western Africa from 1931 to 1958 . He was initially Vice President, from 1958 to 1968 President of the French Society for Music Research. As editor he edited a. a. Chamber music by François Couperin . He was involved in the French edition of the Riemann Music Lexicon and developed a new classification system for musical instruments that differs from the Hornbostel-Sachs system .

A collection of his writings can be found in the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel . Schaeffner was married to the ethnologist and Africanist Denise Paulme .
