André Schembri (born May 27, 1986 in Pietà ) is a Maltese football player on the position of a striker .

Career

Schembri comes from a footballing family, his grandfather Salvinu and his father Eric were Maltese national players. André Schembri began his career with the Hibernians Paola and FC Marsaxlokk , with which he became Maltese champion in 2007. For the 2007/08 season he was loaned by Eintracht Braunschweig for their first team. In total, he played 29 times in the Regionalliga Nord , scoring nine goals and providing three assists. He was the second Maltese after Michael Mifsud in the highest German amateur league. Schembri was suspended from the club before the last match day of the 2007/08 season because he wanted to play a friendly game of the Maltese national team instead of the important game for qualifying for the third division .

For the 2008/09 season he switched to third division club FC Carl Zeiss Jena , initially on loan for a year . For FC Carl Zeiss Jena he scored two goals in the DFB Cup against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and FC Schalke 04. During this time he was used in the attacking midfield.

For the 2009/10 season Schembri moved to SK Austria Kärnten , for which he played 13 Bundesliga games, scoring one goal and making two assists. At the end of January 2010, he and his Austria-Carinthia team-mate Martin Živný received clearance to change clubs. Shortly thereafter, he again completed a trial training session with Živný at the Hungarian first division club Ferencváros Budapest and subsequently signed a contract there. In the 2010/11 season, Schembri scored 16 goals this season and was thus able to attract international interest.

For the 2011/12 season Andre Schembri moved to the Europa League qualifier Olympiakos Volos from Greece . For Volos, Schembri scored a goal in 4 qualifying games and also provided an assist. Since Volos then relegated to the 4th division on suspicion of manipulation, the Schembri contract, which was only valid for the 1st division, ended.

In September 2011 Schembri moved to Panionios Athens .

For the 2014/15 season, Schembri moved from Omonia Nicosia to the second division club FSV Frankfurt . However, at Schembri's request, the contract was terminated at the end of 2014 for personal reasons.

National team

For the Maltese national team , Schembri has played 39 games and scored three goals. He scored two of his three goals in the European Championship qualifier in the 2-1 win against Hungary on October 14, 2006. In addition, in the game against Turkey on November 8, 2007 with his goal Malta 2-1 lead for two minutes , the game ended 2-2.
