Andrea Künzig (* 1963 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German photographer .

life and work

Andrea Künzig completed her diploma studies at the Free University of Berlin in 1991 in political science with a focus on the Middle East and international politics. From 1994 to 1996 she lived and worked as a freelance photographer in Jerusalem and documented the peace efforts in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

1998/99 she worked more than six months in Kenya and started for the magazine Geo the 2019 ongoing long-term project "Basic Needs. Human children "(How does a child live in Africa?). During this period of two decades she photographed the life story of the boy Francis Mutia at regular intervals on location in Kenya . The photographer expanded the focus of the project to include everyday life, living conditions and the development of the residents of the Kenyan village of Musalala.

From 2001 to 2004 Andrea Künzig attended the master class “ Photography on Schiffbauerdamm ” with Arno Fischer . In addition, further commissioned trips for aid organizations, magazines and newspapers to the Middle East and East Africa followed until 2004. From 2009 to 2014 she lived and worked in Istanbul. Her base has been in Berlin since 2014.

She received teaching assignments and organized photo workshops a. a. 2004 for Inwent in Mongolia, 2007 for the Goethe-Institut in Mumbai and 2014 in Istanbul. From 2012 to 2014, Andrea Künzig was a photo expert on the jury of the Robert Bosch Foundation's “Grenzgänger” program .

Andrea Künzig mainly works on reports and long-term projects on socio-political and humanitarian issues around the world. She carried out orders and her own projects. a. to India, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Micronesia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Bahrain, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa and Swaziland. The living environment of women and children is often the focus of photographic work. In her social documentary photo reports, Andrea Künzig u. a. the subjects of HIV, fistula, child labor, debt bondage, migrant labor, medical care or FGM (female genital mutilation) are documented. Another focus of the photographer is the documentation of societies or ethnic groups between tradition and modernity.

After her long stay in the Middle East, the photo book “Visions: Palestine” was created in 2004 and during her time in Istanbul the photo book “Istanbulum” (My Istanbul) was published in 2010.

In 2017 Andrea Künzig began working on a new, free long-term project on the subject of "nature" in different regions of Germany. To do this, she takes photos in forests, biosphere reserves and national parks and uses the camera to investigate the originality and change in forests, also in the context of the climate crisis . The first results were presented in the exhibition "NATURE_up side down".

Andrea Künzig is represented by the agency "laif - Photos & Reportages". She photographs freelance u. a. for National Geographic Traveler, GEO, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, DIE ZEIT, Brigitte and Deutsche Welle. She also works as a photographer for international organizations: u. a. for the German Foundation for World Population, SOS Children's Villages , Terre des Femmes and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Awards / grants

Andrea Künzig received several awards for her photographic work. She was u. a. 2001 nominated by UNICEF as one of the outstanding child photographers and most recently received the Kinderothilfe media prize in 2013 for a photo report on “The brave children from Kampala”. She has already received a grant from VG Bild Kunst twice (2004 and 2008) .
