Andrea Malinconico
Andrea Malinconico ( June 3, 1635 in Naples - October 4, 1698 ibid) was an Italian Baroque painter from the Neapolitan school and the oldest member of a family of painters. He was the father of the much better known Nicola Malinconico .
history
Andrea was born to Aniello Malinconico and Isabella d'Apice. When he was baptized in the Neapolitan parish della Carità (today: San Liborio) he was given the name "Domenico Andrea". According to the testimony of Bernardo De Dominici (and most of the following sources), Andrea did his apprenticeship in the workshop of Massimo Stanzione and was "one of the best students" of the master. In Malinconico's secured works, however, there is particularly an influence of Andrea Vaccaro , and possibly also of Francesco Guarino , Bernardo Cavallino , Anthony van Dyck and Charles Mellin (the latter was in Naples in the 1640s).
Andrea Malinconico married Antonia De Popoli, sister of the painter Giacinto De Popoli, on July 15, 1658. The couple had six children together, two of them, Oronzo and Nicola also became painters. Since Andrea Vaccaro and his son Nicola were witnesses at the wedding, and because of their stylistic affinities, Prota-Giurleo suspected that Malinconico might have been a student of Vaccaro and not of Stanzione.
Malinconico mainly painted religious paintings for churches in Naples and the surrounding area. a. in Pio Monte della Misericordia , in Gesù Vecchio , Girolamini and in the monastery of Suor Orsola Benincasa. He also seems to have hired himself out as a portraitist, at least it has been proven that he painted a portrait of the Prince of Torella in 1670 (lost) and his last documented picture is also a portrait of the Prince of Roccafiorita from Palermo (1696, whereabouts unknown).
In the last two decades of his life and work, his style approached more modern contemporaries such as Luca Giordano and, according to Bortolotti, almost seems "... like an anticipation of Francesco Solimena ".
Malinconico's main work is the pictorial decoration of the Neapolitan church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli , on which he worked between 1679 and the end of 1687, and where, with the exception of the main altarpiece by Andrea Vaccaro and the dome decoration by Giovan Battista Beinaschi , he created most of the paintings, including one Four -part cycle of Mary on the ceiling, and depictions of the four evangelists and four church fathers , as well as of Peter and Paul . He also painted the paintings of the first two chapels on the right and the first chapel on the left, the altarpiece in the right transept and two pictures in the left transept, as well as the two paintings next to the high altar. Most of these works were described in detail and with obvious delight by De Dominici.
When Andrea died on October 4, 1698, he left his six children with a sum of 894 ducats.
