Erik Aurelius the Elder

Sven Erik Aurelius ( the elder to distinguish himself from his grandson of the same name; born May 12, 1874 in Åsbo socken (today part of the Boxholm parish ), Östergötland ; † September 5, 1935 in Vikingstad (now part of the Linköping parish )) was a Lutheran theologian . From 1927 to 1935 he was Bishop of the Linköping Diocese of the Church of Sweden .

Aurelius, the son of pastor Bernhard Aurelius, studied Protestant theology at the University of Uppsala after his school days and - after his first theological exam in 1897 - at the University of Leipzig . In 1905 he obtained a licentiate in theology and was ordained in 1907 . Interrupted by working as a regimental priest and studying at the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies in the Holy Land , he was first a lecturer from 1907, and from 1909 a deputy professor at Uppsala University. In 1912 he took over a professorship for the Old Testament at Lund University , associated with the prebend parish in Dalby , Hällestad and Bonderup. In 1927 he was appointed bishop of the Linköping diocese and introduced on August 29th. He remained in this office until his death.

Aurelius had been married to Julia Marx (1886–1980), a Moravian woman from Germany, since 1912. His sons Sam and Bengt Gustaf Aurelius became pastors, his grandsons Erik Aurelius the Younger and Carl Axel Aurelius became bishops.
