Andreas Aarflot (Bishop)

Andreas Aarflot (born July 1, 1928 in Yiyang , Hunan Province , China ) is a Norwegian Lutheran theologian and bishop emeritus .

Live and act

Aarflot, a descendant of the popular enlightener Sivert Knudsen Aarflot and the revival writer Berte Canutte Aarflot , was born as the son of the missionaries Olav Aarflot (1902–1971) and Marie, nee. Knudsen (1900–1956) born in China. He grew up in Grefsen (district of Oslo since 1948 ), where he graduated from high school in 1946. He then studied Protestant theology at the Menighetsfakultet (parish faculty ) in Oslo and obtained the degree of cand. Theol in 1951. After a few years as a military chaplain and parish priest, he returned to the Menighets Faculty in 1960 . He was first an adjunct , became a lecturer in 1968 and in 1970, after receiving his doctorate as Dr. theol. at the University of Oslo with a thesis on Hans Nielsen Hauge , lecturer. He was also the editor of Luthersk Kirketidende from 1962 to 1976 . In 1976 he was promoted to professor of church history , but was appointed bishop of the diocese of Borg that same year . In the following year he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Oslo and introduced in 1978. At that time that of the President of the Bishops' Conference of the Church of Norway was connected with this office . In this capacity, Aarflot crowned Harald V king in 1991 . After retiring in 1998, he held a professorship for canon law at Volda University until 2003.

Aarflot wrote a number of fundamental works on Norwegian church history. He also intervened, both as an author and as a bishop, in the self-image of the Norwegian Church, as the basis of which he saw the parishes. He campaigned for the liberation of the church from its position as a state church , which was carried out in 2012. Internationally, he was particularly involved in the Lutheran World Federation (1973–1990 member of the Executive Committee), but was also one of the authors of the Leuenberg Agreement of 1973. The Porvoo Agreement between Anglicans and Lutherans, which he was involved in, was particularly close to his heart.

Honors

In 1979, Aarflot became the Star of the Order of Saint Olav . The St. Olaf College ( Northfield (Minnesota) ) and Augustana College (Illinois) distinguished him with honorary doctorates.
