Andreas Alariesto

Andreas Alariesto (born December 11, 1900 in Sodankylä , Grand Duchy of Finland , † November 29, 1989 in Sodankylä, Finland) was a Finnish painter . He was a Sami artist of naive painting . In his pictures he represented the everyday and traditional life as well as the mythology of the Sami as he knew it from his childhood. His works also include miniature sculptures , drawings , stories and photographs .

Alariesto is self-taught and has never had an art education. His specific naive style developed from the 1950s. He became well known in Finland from the 1970s.

Alariesto's works are exhibited in the Museum Gallery Alariesto in Sodankylä. The Riikka and Andreas Alariesto's Lapland Pictures Foundation takes care of the general preservation of the cultural heritage of Lapland and the preservation of Alariesto's works.
