Alfonso de Galarreta (born January 14, 1957 in Torrelavega , Spain ) is one of the three bishops of the Society of St. Pius X. (FSSPX).

Life

Galarreta was born in Spain, but emigrated to Argentina with his family at an early age . In 1975 he entered the seminary in La Plata . In October 1978 he moved to the International Seminary of St. Pius X in Ecône in Switzerland .

In August 1980 he was ordained a priest in Buenos Aires by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre . After his ordination he taught at the International Seminary in La Reja, Argentina . From 1985 to 1988 he was Superior (Head) of the FSSPX South America District.

He was ordained bishop on June 30, 1988 with three other priests by the founder of the FSSPX, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Because these ordinations took place against the will of the Pope, Pope John Paul II issued a decree declaring the excommunication of Lefebvre and the four consecrated bishops.

The Society denies the occurrence of excommunication with reference to an existing "church emergency ", which is why Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta continued to donate sacraments, especially confirmations and ordinations, within the FSSPX.

On July 28, 1991, he assisted in São Fidélis, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in the consecration of Licínio Rangel as bishop, the chairman of the priestly association of St. John Maria Vianney .

In 1994 he became superior of the FSSPX district of Spain and Portugal and in 2002 second assistant to the FSSPX.

On January 21, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. the excommunication of Bishop Alfonso de Galarretas.

At the end of February 2009, Bernard Fellay , the head of the FSSPX, appointed him to the reign of the seminary in La Reja. He succeeded Richard Williamson , who lost this position due to disobedience to the Society. In 2012, the later Superior General Davide Pagliarani became his successor.

After Pagliarani was elected Superior General, he made de Galarreta one of two assistants.
