Life

From October 1977, Bernard Fellay completed his priestly training in the seminary of the Society of St. Pius X. (FSSPX) in Ecône . On 29 June 1982 he received by the founder of the SSPX, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre , the priesthood . In the same year he became an economist in the General House and took on various pastoral tasks. From 1988 he was also an economist for the Swiss district of his order and carried out numerous apostolic trips, including to the countries of the Third World .

He was ordained bishop on June 30, 1988 with three other priests by the founder of the FSSPX, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Because these ordinations took place without the consent of the Pope, Pope John Paul II issued a decree declaring the excommunication of Lefebvre and the four consecrated bishops.

The Society denies the actual occurrence of excommunication with reference to "an existing church emergency ", which is why Fellay continues to donate sacraments, especially confirmations and ordinations, within the FSSPX.

From 1994 Fellay, who speaks five languages, was Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X. In July 2006 he was confirmed in this office for a further twelve years by the General Chapter of the Society. He was supported by the assistants Niklaus Pfluger and Alain-Marc Nély .

During a speech on December 28, 2012 at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy in New Hamburg, Ontario , Fellay described "the Jews, the Freemasons, the modernists" as "the enemies of the Church". Regarding the Jews , Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi rejected Fellay's claim.

Bernard Fellay was not re-elected at the General Chapter of the Pius Brotherhood in July 2018. Successor as Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X is Davide Pagliarani .
