Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch (born December 6, 1965 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian pharmaceutical technologist , scientist , pharmacist , entrepreneur , inventor and professor at the Institute for Pharmacy at the University of Innsbruck . His research focus is on pharmaceutical science, drug delivery systems, cosmetic science, bio- nanotechnology and polymer synthesis . Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch is the inventor of various new technologies such as thiomers or nanocarrier systems that change zeta potential .

Life

Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch comes from a traditional Austrian pharmacist family. He studied pharmacy (Mag. Pharm.) And microbiology and genetics (Dr. rer. Nat.) At the University of Vienna , where he completed his doctorate in 1994. From 1994 to 1999 he was a postdoc at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at the University of Vienna. In 1999 he qualified as a professor ( venia docendi ) in pharmaceutical technology . In 2003 he accepted the chair for pharmaceutical technology at the University of Innsbruck. From 2006 to 2013 Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch represented the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy as dean . Since then he has headed the Institute for Pharmacy in Innsbruck . At the same time, Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch works in the bear pharmacy in Sankt Veit an der Glan , which has been family-owned for over 120 years. Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch and his wife Astrid have three children.

Act

Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch conducts research in the field of multifunctional polymers that are used both in drug delivery systems and as therapeutics . He is the inventor and pioneer of thiolized polymers - so-called thiomers - which represent a new generation of bio- and muco- adhesive polymers. Various new drugs based on thiomers are already in clinical development and a first product for the treatment of dry eye will soon be on the market. The research group around Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch is also responsible for the development of zeta-potential changing nanocarrier systems. In addition, this essential has contributed to the fundamental understanding of self- emulsifying drug delivery systems for the non-invasive administration of macromolecular drugs. Andreas Bernkop-Schnürch is a member of the scientific committee of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) of the European Union in Brussels and member of the scientific advisory board of nicotine - Research Center in Denmark . He is the founder of Mucobiomer Biotechnological Research and Development GmbH (now part of Croma-Pharma GmbH), Thiomatrix Research and Consulting GmbH and Green River Polymers Research and Development GmbH.

Bernkop-Schnürch is the author of over 350 original scientific papers and reviews as well as the editor or (co) author of several books. As of June 2018, his publications were cited more than 17,000 times, his h-index is 67.
