from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Freyhub , also Andreas Freihube , (* 1526 in Sprottau ; † August 10, 1585 in Heidelberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian . He taught at the University of Leipzig . As a Calvinist he was imprisoned and expelled from the country.

Life

Freyhub began studying at the University of Leipzig in 1547 . This lasted two years; In 1549 the university made him a baccalaureus artium, in 1552 a master's degree in philosophy, on January 30, 1557 a baccalaureus in theology, on May 22, 1558 a licentiate and on May 25 finally a doctorate .

Freyhub was appointed dean of the artist faculty as early as 1557 , which he remained until the next year. From 1558 to 1559 he was rector of the University of Leipzig , and from 1562 to 1563. In 1562 he was also canon in Zeitz ; three years later the theological faculty hired him as a full professor . He was then rector in 1570/1571.

Freyhub held the professorship until 1576, when he was imprisoned in that year. Elector August took action against Calvinism at this time . In 1574 he forced Saxon theologians to sign the Torgau Articles , Freyhub did so. Two years later there were further interrogations of suspected Calvinists at the university. On May 26th, he was arrested for signing but not adhering to the Articles. It was said that he taught, "Christ was exalted according to both natures, the humanity of Christ did not actually receive the attributes of the divinity, Christ's body is in heaven in a certain place and nowhere else." The interrogators negotiated for two days Freyhub, so that he finally rejected his teachings and was released from prison on June 7th. When he returned from Torgau to Leipzig, he continued to hold on to his teachings. He was then expelled from the country. On August 3, he moved to Zerbst , after which he was accepted in Heidelberg, where he died on August 10, 1585.

Remarks

  1. ^ In the ADB it is stated that Freyhub died on August 3, 1576 in Zerbst. Vogel and others give this date, however, as the day on which Freyhub went there.
