Andreas Geverdes (* probably in Magdeburg ; † April 19, 1477 in Lübeck ) was mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

The dressmaker Geverdes migrated from Magdeburg to Lübeck around 1442. His three siblings stayed in Magdeburg. He was elected to the City Council of Lübeck in 1451 and appointed mayor of the city in 1475. He represented the city in 1468 during the negotiations on the Münzrezess with Hamburg , 1472 in talks with Hamburg councilors in Mölln , 1475 as an arbitrator in a dispute of the Kontor of the Hanseatic League in Bergen ( Bryggen ), with the Bergen outside the German Kontor in City of tailors and shoemakers, 1476 in negotiations with the city of Lüneburg about a new duty levied there .

In 1458 he acquired a farm in Wesenberg and in 1461 half of the Westerau estate together with the garment tailor Gerhard von Lenten († after 1494) . Both bequeathed the village of Westerau to a foundation in 1477 in memory of them and to support those in need. This foundation has been administered by the city of Lübeck since the Reformation ; the village thus became one of the city monastery villages. Even today, several hectares of forest belong to this Westerau foundation .

According to the tradition of the Rehbein Chronicle (1619), Andreas Geverdes is still the founder of the late Gothic rood screen panel in Lübeck Cathedral, made by Bernt Notke in 1477 . The donor's coat of arms was still on the rood screen at the time of Senior Jacob von Melle at the beginning of the 18th century. The model for the design was the rood screen in Magdeburg Cathedral ; Andreas Geverde's brother Johann was a councilor in his hometown and had probably sent the sketches required as a template for Notke.

He also donated the infirmary for lepers in Klein Grönau just outside the gates south of the city. It was built in 1480 with funds from his estate.

Geverdes became a member of the circle society in 1460 .
