Andreas Helmke

Andreas Helmke (* 1945 ) is a German educational scientist and emeritus professor for developmental psychology and educational psychology at the University of Koblenz-Landau .

Life

After studying law and psychology, he worked from 1977 to 1982 in educational research projects under the direction of Helmut Fends at the University of Konstanz , where he received his doctorate; from 1982 to 1992 he worked with Franz Emanuel Weinert and was a project manager at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich; his habilitation took place at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1991. Helmke retired in 2013.

Services

From 1992 to 2013 he was a full university professor at the University of Koblenz-Landau. From 1996 to 1998 he was visiting professor of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at the National University Hanoi / Vietnam and since 1997 he has been honorary professor for educational psychology and developmental psychology at the Institute for Psychology at the University of Innsbruck . Together with his wife Tuyet, Helmke advises the Vietnamese Ministry of Education; he is also an advisor to education ministries and quality agencies in Germany and Switzerland.

Focus

Helmke is one of the representatives of empirical educational science. In 2002, he examined mathematics teaching in Rhineland-Palatinate in the MARKUS study, one of the first German large-scale assessment studies . He is also responsible for the VERA (comparative work in schools) for the German ministries of education. His "Ten characteristics of good teaching" and the collection of tools for "evidence-based methods of teaching diagnosis and development (EMU)", which was developed as part of the UdiKom project, are well known.
