Andreas Hofer (composer)
Andreas Hofer (* 1628 or 1629 in Reichenhall, today Bad Reichenhall , † February 25, 1684 in Salzburg ) was a composer and court conductor in Salzburg.
The musicologist Karl Weinmann was able to prove through his research in 1918 that Andreas Hofer did not come from Styria, as previously assumed, but from Reichenhall.
Life
Andreas Hofer was born in Reichenhall in Bavaria in 1628 or 1629. In 1643 he began studying theology at the University of Salzburg and at the same time received his musical training, probably from the court conductor Abraham Megerle . In 1651 Hofer took over the position of organist in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht in Styria. He was ordained a priest on June 12, 1653. When he returned to Salzburg, the archbishop appointed him vice music director and vicar choir in 1654. At times he taught at the Kapellhaus , one of his students was Johann Baptist Samber . On January 12, 1679, Archbishop Max Gandolph Graf von Kuenburg appointed him Hofkapellmeister.
As a composer, Hofer is an important representative of the multi-choir vocal-instrumental church style of the 17th century. With his works he was able to consolidate the reputation of the internationally renowned Salzburg court orchestra. Andreas Hofer, together with Megerle, paved the way for the heyday of multi-choir music care at Salzburg Cathedral. His compositional style was increased to the oversized by his successor Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber in the famous 53-part Missa Salisburgensis . The assumption that Hofer could be the creator of this work has not been confirmed.
Andreas Hofer died on February 25, 1684 in Salzburg and was buried in the collegiate church of St. Peter in the side chapel at the Rupertus grave.
