Andreas Johannes Laskaris (* 1445 in Constantinople ; † December 7, 1534 in Rome ), also Janos Laskaris ( Ἰᾶνος Λάσκαρις ), Giano Lascaris or Andrea Giovanni Lascari , was a Greek explorer and humanist .

Life

Laskaris comes from the Byzantine imperial family of the Laskarids . Andreas Johannes Laskaris grew up in the Peloponnese . He emigrated to Italy, where he was first in Padua studied and then in Rome Accademia Romana of Pomponio Leto belonged. He later became a teacher and taught Pierio Valeriano , among others .

The Florentine Lorenzo de 'Medici tried to build his library and Laskaris advocated it with the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II . From 1491 to 1492 he undertook research trips to Greece and the Levant for the library of the Medici . He traveled to Corfu, Arta, Thessaloniki, Crete and the Peloponnese, among others. In the monasteries of Athos and in Constantinople he acquired codices; including the only commentary by Proclus on the Republic of Plato.

In 1495 he went to France, where he played a decisive role in the development of French humanism .
