Karl Konrad Müller (born July 7, 1854 in Würzburg , † June 15, 1903 in Jena ) was a German classical philologist and librarian .

Life

Karl Konrad Müller, the son of the Würzburg anatomy professor Heinrich Müller (1820–1864), attended the grammar school in his hometown and, after graduating in 1871, moved to the University of Würzburg at the age of 17 . There he studied philology with Ludwig von Urlichs and Martin Schanz . He later moved to the University of Erlangen , where he was influenced by Iwan von Müller and Eduard Wölfflin .

After the state examination (1875), Müller did military service in the infantry and then embarked on a career in the library. He worked in the University Library of Würzburg and wrote his dissertation on the way are the panels of Kebes with which he 1877 doctorate was. In 1879 he undertook his first study trip to Italy (supported by a state grant), on which he studied Greek manuscripts and came up with the plan for his life's work: to produce a critical complete edition of the Greek war writers. Müller worked on this project for more than two decades without ever bringing it to a close. He published only a few excerpts from his extensive studies because the results did not meet his requirements.

At the instigation of the historian Heinrich Gelzer , Müller was appointed director of the Jena University Library in 1888 and was given the title of director and councilor. In this position, Müller performed a multitude of duties that paralyzed his own research work: he supervised the new building of the library, organized the university's coin collection, supervised the publication of the Jena song manuscript (since 1896) and prepared the Jena Library Day (1902).

Karl Konrad Müller died on June 15, 1903 at the age of 49 from an acute bowel disease.
