Andreas May

Andreas May (born November 12, 1817 in Bamberg ; † January 7, 1899 in Munich ) was a German lawyer and playwright .

Life

May was born the son of a beer brewer . He attended high school and the episcopal lyceum in Bamberg. After studying law in Würzburg and Munich, he received his doctorate and state examination in Bayreuth in 1842 . In 1843 he became an assessor at the Upper Franconian Court of Appeal . In 1848 he was transferred to Munich. In the following years he was promoted to the "Council at the Supreme Court" and also acted as jury president . After suffering a minor stroke in 1878, he was retired . In his free time and in his retirement he devoted himself to literature and published under the pseudonym "Richard Franke". For a long time he was chairman of the Munich branch of the German Schiller Foundation . Some of his plays were played in the National Theater in Munich .

May maintained friendly contact with Emanuel Geibel , Melchior Mayr , Hermann von Schmid and Paul Heyse .
