Andreas Benedict Pflüger (born August 23, 1941 in Basel ) is a Swiss composer.

Life and works

Andreas Pflüger is the second son of the Swiss painter Carl Pflüger-Gottstein (1884–1974). In his hometown he attended the Rudolf Steiner School , the mathematical and natural science high school and the Music Academy of the City of Basel , which he graduated in 1965 with a diploma in composition and double bass . After studying at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon , Pflüger worked for the composer Igor Markevitch in Madrid from 1966 to 1968 . In the 1970s he attended the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music several times and worked there with Karlheinz Stockhausen , Mauricio Kagel and others. In the 1990s he was an expert in international music competitions. In 1997 and 1998 he went on lecture tours on the history of Swiss music ("Strolling through 200 years of Swiss Music") at universities in the USA and Argentina , and in 2007 he went on a tour to Japan.

He composed numerous chamber music works, about 20 compositions for orchestra , two ballets and eight operas . One of his most important works is the opera Die Physiker , which premiered at the Czech State Opera in 2000 (based on the play of the same name by Friedrich Dürrenmatt ), which was re-staged in Russian in 2018 at the Kislovodsk Opera House as a Russian premiere. In 2004 the opera Grand or the story of a dream (Silesian National Theater in Opava / Czech Republic) followed, in 2006 on Mozart's 250th birthday the opera Der Schwarze Mozart ("Kaserne" Basel) and in 2009 the opera Mord im St. Johann ("Imprimerie "Basel)

In 2015, the opera Romulus der Grosse was created based on the comedy of the same name by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, which premiered on December 12, 2015 at the Théâtre du Passage in Neuchâtel under the direction of Facundo Agudin as part of the celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of the great Swiss playwright and in April was re-enacted in Basel.

In the course of his professional life he distanced himself from the “purism” of serial music , which he perceives as “petrified and brittle”: “My music should be voluptuous, juicy and sensual.” He also composed more than 100 under the pseudonym “Andy Benedict” Film music .

Andreas Pflüger lives and works in Basel. He is married to the violinist Katharina Schamböck (* 1952).
