Andreas Samuel

Andreas Samuel (Polish Andrzej Samuel ; † before June 22, 1549 in Marienwerder , Duchy of Prussia ) was a Polish Dominican monk in Posen and later a Lutheran theologian in Prussia.

Life

Its origin is unknown. As a Dominican monk, Andreas Samuel had been a priest in the cathedral in Posen since 1520. In 1535 he had to leave the city because of Lutheran sermons. After studying in unknown places, he returned, but was sentenced to death for heresy in 1541.

Andreas Samuel fled to the Duchy of Prussia. From there he went to Wittenberg and then to study in Leipzig , where he received his licentiate that year. In 1543 he obtained his doctorate and married.

Since 1544 Samuel was pastor and superintendent in Gilgenburg (Polish: Dąbrówno ) in the Duchy of Prussia. There he met with severe criticism because of his strict demeanor. He excommunicated several parishioners for minor offenses such as belated baptism of a newborn. In 1547, at the request of Duke Albrecht, Bishop Speratus gave him a new position in the Masurian Passenheim ( Pasym in Polish ), where the same complaints arose.

In 1549 Andreas Samuel went to Marienwerder (Polish: Kwidzyn ), where he died soon after.
