Andreas Zimmermann (archaeologist)

Andreas Zimmermann (born June 17, 1951 in Naumburg (Saale) ) is a German prehistorian .

Zimmermann studied prehistory , geology and Egyptology at the Universities of Cologne and Tübingen. He received his doctorate in 1982 on the stone material of the linear ceramic settlement area Langweiler 8 . In 1992, he completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt am Main with the thesis Exchange systems of flint artifacts in the ceramic tape of Central Europe . Since 1997 he has been a professor at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory in Cologne.

Zimmermann's research focus is on the investigation of the Neolithic Age , in particular linear ceramics . He also deals with the application of quantitative methods and the use of geographic information systems in archeology . Paleodemographic questions, such as estimating population densities in the Stone Age, also fall into his field of work. In cooperation with Harald Koschik , at that time director of the Rhenish Office for Ground Monument Preservation (RAB), Zimmermann continued the research project on ceramic tape on the Aldenhovener plate that Jens Lüning and Rudolph Kuper had started in 1968 .

Andreas Zimmermann is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and holder of the Archeology Prize of the Foundation for the Promotion of Archeology in the Rhenish Brown Coal District . He is also a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz .
