The Andreasbrunnen ( Palatinate : Andresebrunne ) on the market square of the Palatinate country town Deidesheim is a fountain that is considered a cultural monument worthy of protection . It is named after the Deidesheim politician and winemaker Andreas Jordan (1775–1848).

history

The fountain was donated by Deidesheim's mayor Ludwig Andreas Jordan and his family in honor of his father Andreas Jordan, who was also mayor of Deidesheim from 1819 to 1834. On September 25, 1851, the fountain was inaugurated with music and gunfire. The Deidesheim politician Franz Peter Buhl gave the keynote address. For a long time the fountain was decorated every year on St. Andrea's Day (November 30th), and on that day all of Deidesheim's school children received a pretzel from a foundation of the Jordan family.

investment

The cast iron fountain is painted green. Its trough is octagonal and stands on a low, also octagonal step made of sandstone. Each of the eight outer side walls of the fountain basin is provided with three cassettes that frame a leaf motif - except for the middle cassette of the outer wall, which faces west, it bears the following inscription:

This fountain line dedicated to
the city of
Deidesheim in
memory
of its fellow citizen
Andreas Jordan
by his children.

The well's stick has two bowls, the lower, larger one of which is carried by four dolphins; underneath is a pedestal, decorated with eight water-spouting lion heads, which are aligned to the eight sides of the fountain trough. The upper, smaller bowl rests on a fluted column. The Andreas Fountain was made by the Gienanth iron foundry in Eisenberg and is based on models from the Italian High Renaissance . It is one of the most important examples of iron casting in the Palatinate .
