Andrei Alexandrovich Lieven ( Russian Андрей Александрович Ливен ; born June 9, jul. / 21st June  1839 greg. In Simferopol , † March 2 jul. / 15. March  1913 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a deutschbaltisch - Russian Minister for State property.

Life

Lieven was the eldest son of Prince Alexander Karlowitsch Lievens and his wife Jekaterina Nikititschna Pankratjewa and grandson of Prince Karl von Lievens . He attended the 4th Moscow High School and then studied at the Moscow University in the natural science department of the physical - mathematical faculty , graduating in 1859.

Lieven then worked in the Office of the Interior Ministry at the Chancellery of the Governor General of Livonia , Estonia and Courland . He became vice governor of the Kursk governorate (1865), the Chernigov governorate (1867) and the Moscow governorate (1869). In 1870 he became governor of the Moscow governorate. In 1871 he was appointed to the Real Council of State (4th class ). In 1872 Lieven became the representative of the Minister for State Property Count Pyotr Alexandrovich Valuev . In 1874 he was appointed State Secretary . In 1879 he became a member of the State Council . 1879–1881 he was Minister for State Property.

In the 1870s, many higher officials, including Lieven and employees of the ministry, were given large estates in the Ufa governorate almost free of charge . This plundering of the Bashkir state property led to a public scandal, whereupon Alexander III. Forced Lieven to resign from his posts and to return his estate in the Ufa governorate. Lieven retired to his Spasskoye estate in the Moscow governorate. There he built an observatory and devoted himself to astronomical observations. As a result of careless solar observation, the right eye became blind.

In January 1910 Lieven was recalled to the State Council. From 1912 he worked in the main administration of the office for the charities of Empress Maria . In 1913 he became Real Privy Councilor (2nd class ).

Lieven was married to Natalia Stepanova Strekalova (1839–1866), daughter of the Moscow benefactress Alexandra Nikolajewna Strekalova and granddaughter of Senator Stepan Stepanowitsch Strekalow , with whom he had two children. After her death in 1867 he married Varvara Sergejewna Muchanowa (1838-1897), daughter of Prince Sergei Pavlovich Golitsyns and mother of the politician Alexei Alexejewitsch Muchanow .

Lieven was buried in the family crypt of the Golitsyns on their country estate Troitskoye Kainardschi near Balashicha .
