Andrei Kokot

Andrej Kokot (born November 23, 1936 in Oberdorf ( Slovenian Zgornja vas ) near Köstenberg , municipality of Velden am Wörther See (Slovenian Vrba ob jezeru ); † November 7, 2012 in Klagenfurt ) was a writer, poet and translator of the Slovenian-speaking ethnic group in Carinthia .

Life

In 1942 Andrej Kokot and his family were deported by the National Socialists because they belonged to the Slovenian ethnic group . From 1942 to 1945 he was interned with his family in the Rehnitz , Rastatt and Gerlachsheim camps. His brother Jožek Kokot was hanged on September 25, 1944 in Mauthausen concentration camp . In the spring months of 1945 the family returned to Köstenberg.

From 1963 to 1980 Andrej Kokot was secretary of the Slovenian Cultural Association in Klagenfurt / Celovec. From 1980 to 1991 he worked as the cultural editor of the Slovenian-language newspaper “Slovenski vestnik”.

Andrej Kokot also worked as a translator. He has translated texts by Peter Handke , Erich Fried and Michael Guttenbrunner into Slovenian , among others . Andrej Kokot, who wrote his works in Slovenian, also translated his own works into German.

Kokot lived as a pensioner in Klagenfurt / Celovec together with his wife Milka Kokot.

He was awarded the Nagrada Prešernovega sklada, Laibach / Ljubljana 1983.
