Andrew Mango (born June 14, 1926 in Istanbul , † July 6, 2014 ) was a British historian and writer .

Life

Andrew Mango was born to Anglo- Russian parents and was the brother of the Byzantinist Cyril Mango . Andrew moved to London in 1947 to take up a position in the press department of the British Embassy. In London he studied at the University of London and received his doctorate in Persian literature . While still a student, he worked for the BBC , designed the Turkish radio program there and eventually rose to head the radio station's southern European service. In 1986 he retired. However, he became famous for his books on Turkey in general and Ataturk in particular.

In his books, Mango points to the rapid economic development of Turkey and denies an Islamist danger by comparing the role of religion in Turkey with the role of the Christian church in Victorian England , emphasizing above all the achievements of Ataturk.

In 2005 he published the book Turkey and the War on Terror , in which he analyzes the terrorist groups in Turkey and their international relations, noting that the terrorist problems that the West has been facing since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 has been dealing with Turkey for many years.

Andrew Mango denied the genocide of the Armenians in his lectures and is often cited by opponents of the recognition of genocide .

Mango was the author of articles in the Encyclopaedia of Islam , which is one of the most informative specialist literature in oriental studies . Mango was the author of specialist articles in Middle Eastern Studies , which is one of the most respected journals on the Orient.
