Andrew Ryan

Sir Andrew Ryan KBE , CMO 1916 (born November 5, 1876 , † December 31, 1949 in Albania ) was a British diplomat .

Life

Andrew Ryan was the son of Edward Ryan of Ronayn's Court, Douglas, Cork. Andrew Ryan married Ruth Marguerite, their sons were Columba Ryan (born January 13, 1916 - August 4, 2009) and the cartoonist John Ryan (* March 4, 1921 - July 22, 2009).

Andrew Ryan joined the foreign service on April 12, 1897 and was posted to the Levant on April 20, 1897 as a student interpreter .

Andrew Ryan was consul general in Rabat from 1924 until 1924 . Andrew Ryan had knowledge of Turkish law and was a participant in the Lausanne conference .

In 1927, Great Britain gave in the Agreement of Jeddah , the area along the west coast of Arabia conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the First World War , called the "British Protectorate of Arabia", to Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud and guaranteed the independence of Arabia. In May 1930, Andrew Ryan presented his letter of accreditation to Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud in the Blue Palace in the presence of Hafiz Wahba and Fouad Bey Hamza .

In April 1934, Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud published a green book in which he presented his legal opinion on a border conflict with Imam Yahya Hamid Uddin. This green book was translated by Mr AS Calvert and commented on by Ryan. In 1935 Ryan traveled to Riyadh with Gerald De Gaury .

Andrew Ryan was British Ambassador to Albania from 1936 to 1939 . After the occupation of Albania by Italian troops in April 1939, he remained as consul in Tirana and was retired in 1940. He was the British Foreign Office's liaison with Ahmet Zogu , who found asylum in the United Kingdom during World War II . Ryan's memoir, The Last of the Dragomans , is about politics and diplomacy at the court of Ahmet Zogu in Albania in the 1930s .
